Good evening. Back in July of this year, I customer stated that her Ricoh MP3352 had a scanning issue. It started when she used the ADF in SCANNER mode, the documents would have a blank space approximately 1-11/16" from the top of the page. If she scanned the same document in COPY mode, the document was fine. I performed a memory clear of the scanner (SP8501-9) and the results were acceptable until a week ago. I performed the memory clear again, but this time there was no change. I have attached printouts of the documents, the original, SCANNER mode and COPY mode. If I had the theory of operation, it would help. Any assistance would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.Thru ADF in Scanner Mode.pdfThru ADF in Copy Mode.pdfOriginal Document.pdf

Re: MP 3352 Missing text/blank line on scanned document
Hello
Firstly I would like to know if the documents being fed and copied LEF or SEF.
I'm going to assume that it is LEF until you say otherwise.
You say that you had this problem earlier and did a memory reset and it came right. I would say the first thing you need to try is firmware update for all your modules.
If that doesn't work the next thing I would look at is changing the lens and SBU board as an entire unit. Swap it with another and test. These have a tendency of getting damaged if there's some sort of electrical power surge or fluctuations in the area.
Next up check you laser unit and glass shield on it. Make sure all is clean. PCU thereafter check your drum, charge and developer. If your PCU has done some mileage swap it with another 1 just to test if it corrects the problem.
That's the basic steps. Try it and let us know how it goes. -

2) you never mention pages passed thru ADF.
3) ADF Rollers cleaned?
4) error/jam codes

Re: MP 3352 Missing text/blank line on scanned document
If you get a similar result placing the original on the platen glass, then what KeviM says is most likely the problem. You have to remove the entire lens block, including the cross frame that the lens hangs from. The lens is factory aligned to that cross frame. If you loosen the screws holding the lens to the cross frame you could spend days trying to align it again.
If it only affects the document feeder you may have something on the slit glass like a finger print.Comment

Re: MP 3352 Missing text/blank line on scanned document
If these faint areas are in the original feed direction (LEF), it could be as simple as a dirty shading plate/roller.
I had a Kyocera not long ago that all second side scans through the DF were nearly blank. The white reference roller for the second side CIS was as close to solid black as I've ever seen one. It must have something to do do with the originals they're scanning. To my surprise it came very close to perfectly clean with ZEP fast505.
The shading plate/shading roller/white plate/white roller serves as a reference to calibrate the CIS to the background color of originals. If the reference is solid black, then the CIS is calibrating to black as the background original color, making the text invisible.
Another thing: Just because your customer noticed it yesterday, does not mean that it occurred suddenly. It very well could have happenened very gradually, like a roller getting dirty, without the enduser noticing. Enduser observations can be very helpful, or completely incorrect ... or anywhere in between. I use them as a starting point only when I make my own observations. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Very interesting. I'm having a little trouble wrapping my mind around that. Give me a few minutes to think about it and I'm sure I'll have some questions.Adversity temporarily visits a strong man but stays with the weak for a lifetime.Comment

This is a legal office and the documents are mostly contracts, depositions, etc., so there are lots of pages. That's why they are using the ADF in SCANNER mode. The court requires that all submitted documents be in pdf format. When they are scanning documents on the scanner glass in either the SCANNER or COPY modes, the documents are perfect.
The first thing I did was clean all the scanner mirrors, and both the exposure glass and the scanner exposure glass. The OPC and cleaning blade were replaced 6 months ago, the charging roller will have to be changed due to a faint line produced across the page. I tried to rub it out, but with little success.
As far as updating the firmware, my Ricoh qualifications have expired. So we may have to bring in an outside tech. However could you provide a part number for the lens that you mentioned in your reply it would be deeply appreciated.Comment

Re: MP 3352 Missing text/blank line on scanned document
1. I have resubmitted the attachments.
2. This only happens when the customer uses the ADF in either SCANNER or COPY mode, but so bad in COPY mode.
3. I cleaned the ADF rollers and pads, as well as the scanner mirrors and both the document feeder exposure glass and the exposure glass.
4. There were no jam or other error codes. It add an "Add Toner" issue that was resolved.

Re: MP 3352 Missing text/blank line on scanned document
Thanks Slimslob. I just remembered, when I fed the original through the document feeder in portrait orientation, that is when the line of text was absent. However, if I fed it through in landscape, it came out perfect. How ever they can't use it this way as it reduces the size of any images.Comment

Hi
Please find attached the parts layout and part number underlined in orange.
Before you change the lens assembly please have a look at what the others have said.

This should make ZERO difference in the size of anything, unless you've got some dirty/ defective paper size sensorsComment
