Ricoh Pro C651EX not pumping toner

    Hi everyone,

I have an older Ricoh Pro C651EX. I bought it recently for a smaller amount of money.
The printer is from a company that went bankrupt and it seems like the printer had a factory reset before i got it.
As a start the printer worked fine, but now it doesn't pump black toner into the sub hopper.

I contacted Ricoh for professional help, but they refused to help saying that the printer is too old and they don't have spare parts for it. They told me i have to buy a new one..
I then started researching and then i eventually reached out to a printer technician our company has used for other machines. He has 40+ years experience with office machines.

First we tried changing the toner pump. That changed nothing. After that we went to the factory SP menu (Found the code on Google).
In the factory SP menu we checked that the Toner end sensor worked. We also checked via the output options that the toner supply motor and both clutches works.
So with the output options we can manually fill the sub hopper with toner and print for a while again.

Does anyone have a clue about what could be wrong? My technician is almost lost of options as he doesn't have experience with this particular machine. But he's pretty certain it has something to do with the software, not something physical on the printer.
He thinks something was lost in the factory reset.

    Its usually toner pump, D0743551
    or clogged hose.

If you have faulty toner pump, machine will try to add toner couple times and the will "kill" toner crum chip, and will not add toner to hoper. In that case, you wont see toner status on display.

My first action are that check if toner pump makes suction. Just remove hose and and start toner supply motor, then toner pump from diagnostic.

But, if you already replaced toner pump with new or working one, try replacing new black toner.

There is also a firmware patch that can recover killed chip.

    Edit:
Just realised that you manually filled hoper. In that case machine will show toner status on display, but chip is "dead" and machine thinks that there are no reasons to fill hoper with empty toner.

Thank you very much for your fast reply, it's greatly appreciated!
We did try replacing the toner, but it didn't help. The status says the toner is full. But maybe the printer also killed the chip on the new toner.
Do you know where to get the firmware patch to recover?

When you install new toner, does machine start to rotate toner and do you hear the sound from toner pump?
Are you sure your toner pump is working?

No the machine doesn't start to rotate the toner. We hear nothing from the toner pump.
But the toner pump we replaced is brand new, and if we manually rotate the gears or use the SP output and manually run the pump it works fine

            Check your PM.
If you have first replaced toner pump and then toner cartridge you should have working machine.
I never had any other problem with toner supply, but toner pump and bad chip.

I've answered to your PM, but i can't see my reply in the "Sent Items" folder, so i don't know if you got my reply?

If it had been setting for any length of time, you may have a clog in the tubes that go from the toner bottles to the toner pumps or the toner nozzles.

He had to apply the patch or install new toner (or toner chip).

confirmation on the cure? I have a unit doing the same thing it seems like...WILL NOT command the pump... confirmed the hopper clutches work, nothing in toner tube. This is the 2nd pump ive put in.

Not trying to hijack this old post. What was the fix? I have replaced the toner pump, new bottle. Any help would be great. I am a ricoh tech, but no longer at the company.
