I found this in another MP 161 forum, maybe it will help.

I have seen this issue when the paper end sensor for tray 1 detects no paper briefly and causes the machine to stop. Keep an eye on the paper out indicator that turns red as well as the indicator on the display when making copies to test this. Just pressing start will resume the copy process. Replacing the sensor doesn't always fix it since it seems to be a software issue with the timing of the sensor being too quick to detect no paper. If you do an input check before replacing the sensor, you will see that it works just fine. Stretching the spring that sits under the paper lift plate seems to help keep the paper higher and forces the end sensor actuator to stay active.

I forgot about that damned switch. The mount legs for them break off. On some models they are mounted to flimsy metal bracket the get bent so the switch does not set exactly correct. If the rear paper fence breaks and moves up slightly, the switch will hit it making it hard to open the tray and damaging the switch and bracket. Just to mention a few of the problems. Oh yeah, too much paper can also cause it to damage the switch.
