IM4000 stuck on "Waiting for firmware update data"

So I have an im4000 that is stuck on the waiting for firmware update data screen. I went ahead and threw the newest firmware package file on an SD card and put it in the service port and tried to update that way to no prevail.... It seems like automatic firmware update tried to run and there was an error or loss of power. Nobody's on site during the scheduled ARFU update allowed time frames. I thought maybe it was my SD card so I went to a nearby machine (also an IM4000) and put the card in and it began to update process as expected. I thought maybe I could open up all the doors and disconnect the internal finisher in hopes that the SD CARD update process would get a head start and beat the automatic firmware update, but that didn't work either. I can hit the home button and it will go to the home screen without any application icons. It seems pretty responsive so that leads me to believe that there isn't anything wrong with the hard drive. And I can't log into the WIM. I'm probably going to have to open a ticket with Ricoh directly on this one. Any ideas on what I could give a try before I open up the ticket with Ricoh? I'm going to try a different SD card in hopes that the different speed of card my allow the device to begin the firmware upgrade before it looks for the automatic firmware update data... I'm at a loss here...

Try creating a SD card with individual firmware modules, preferably exactly the same modules that were being updated by the ARFU session. That is how you had to recover from a failed firmware update in the past.

Is the update tool still running on a PC in the background?
I've had that happen more than once where the update didn't reach 100% on the tool for one reason or another - even after several hours, and when I reboot the machine, the screen you've described would always return - unless and until I completely shut down the update tool.

I've had that happen more than once where the update didn't reach 100% on the tool for one reason or another - even after several hours, and when I reboot the machine, the screen you've described would always return - unless and until I completely shut down the update tool.

With this being the ARFU, which is built into the MFP, no PC is involved; it connects directly to the web all by its little lonesome.

No RFUT involved.

Makes me wonder if the ARFU isn’t pulling some FUBARed firmware.

Try downloading the pkg file from TSRC, then FTPing it directly to the machine.

From a command prompt:

1. Type “FTP <ip address>“

2. Type “admin”, then the WIM password, if there is one

3. Type “binary”

4. Type “put <filepath to pkg file>\package name.pkg”

I don’t even trust some of the package files on TSRC. Just this week, I found that the pkg for the MP C3003 was corrupt. I opened it with 7-Zip, and found that one of the firmware files in it (I did not note which one) was an .fwu file, instead of being an .rfu, as it should be. Grrrrrrrrr.

I am inclined to think that if the ARFU file was wonky, the Package file might have the same corruption. If the package is wonky he might be able to use the previous version. If there is a way to determine exactly which file it failed on he could try to FTP just that .rfu file.

I preferred downloading from file repository, rfg-esource. After learning to use the search form, I could get a list of all the current firmware for a model, select the file I wanted and download them all to o foldere. I usually did 3 downloads, all common files, all SOP files and all NOP files. Each had its own folder. Back when Firefox properly ran scripts, it would download, extract and build the romdata folder in with one click for each.

Is it possible to get the ten key pad on the display? In this case it could be a chance to try the Yellow143+several times "C" combo to tell the machine not to display that message again so you can boot it with SD card and start the update from scratch.

At the moment I deactivate the entire remote update process, and I prefer to update the firmware individually, as required and with my reliable SD Card. If it is essential, always the ENGINE, SYSTEM COPY, and those related to the network.
The truth is that little should need to be updated, when network protocols take years to modify. For example the SMB.

At the moment I deactivate the entire remote update process, and I prefer to update the firmware individually, as required and with my reliable SD Card. If it is essential, always the ENGINE, SYSTEM COPY, and those related to the network.

It seems that Ricoh instead of inserting improvements gives us more problems. I have never liked that the machines update themselves and more when many times you see bulletins of the type "do not install the xxx firmware package due to problems"

Yeah they should develop a save method first before rolling out such features. Kind of sad considering this is the year 2022...

Wow, so many replies so quickly! I appreciate it! I did try to enter special SP mode and just like the standard SP mode it doesnt go into it. And this line of machines ONLY has the package FW and doesn't have any individual modules... Unfortunately..... I'll try the ftp thing. It will at least let me know if the devices remote management console if firing up...same with telnet. But I'm thinking its borked. Man, lately I've had some luck. This will be my 3rd express net ticket to Ricoh in just as many weeks. (Insert noise of when you overbid on the price is right)
