    [Misc] MP402 Noise

    Hi All..
I picked up 3 of the MP402's recently and 2 of them have the same noise when you close the front or rear cover.
I only have a couple of others in the field, and they don 't have the noise (as far as I'm aware)
I've done a few longer runs including duplexing - both to see if it would happen during that time, and also to see if it would work itself out.
The noise was basically non-existent during use, although I did hear a couple of short "whines" during the run.
Machines work flawlessly otherwise, and the meters aren't high at all.
It's not the Toner cartridge OR the PCDU, but I can't figure out what would cause it .
It doesn't even occur when the machine warms up out of energy saver mode - It's basically only when the front/ rear cover is opened / closed
It's almost as if it's an inherent issue with some of these units?

Anyone else experienced this and have a fix?

    Re: MP402 Noise

If you clear a misfeed by opening the covers you mentioned, maybe it has something to do with a fuser pressure motor. Just a thought, Sandy. I have never worked on one of these.
OR, it could have something to do with this.

      Thank you for the video.

It's bit of a tricky 1 because the noise is not constant.

I got a 402 in the workshop and it doesn't make those noises.

      I would suggest 2 things
      1) remove your fuser and check for issues. I believe there a cleaning roller on the pressure roller. Perhaps it's coated and needs to be cleaned.
      2) do an output check. SP5804 (if I'm remembering correctly otherwise it's 5803) turn on the motor for the main drive and for the fuser and the duplex. Check if 1 of those start making that noise

I have had a similar noise problem with previous low volume models when a film of toner builds up either the shaft of the transfer roller or the inside of the bushings. It makes the gears of the roller jump teeth with the gear on the drum that drives it. After a few seconds, the roller starts turning freely until it set for a couple of hours.

          Thanks Mika!
There's no pressure release mechanism in this unit though. The fuser just clips in much like an SP5200 if you've seen any of those?
It's under constant pressure, but that's a good call because it does sound sort of like the main motor strains to get the fuser moving initially, but to me, that doesn't explain why it doesn't happen coming out of energy saver
As for that bulletin. Thanks again, and I've come across that in the past, but not in this case.

There is really only the main motor output. There doesn't appear to be a fuser motor or duplex.
I've had this issue for a while and just got around to posting about it, and I honestly can't remember if I tried another fuser from a known "quiet" machine, although I did swap in another PCDU for sure.
This machine is at my home office. I think I have some spare fusers at my shop and will pop one in to compare when I can get to it.

          Thanks !

            Just to provide a follow-up...
I grabbed a good fuser out of an SP4520 printer at my shop to try in this unit.
            Same noise.
I'm not going to lose any sleep over this one, since it's basically only present for a few seconds after removing a jam or changing the toner, and otherwise the printer(s) work perfectly fine
I just thought I'd throw it out there in case someone had the remedy
            Thanks !

                Re: MP402 Noise

I am thinking the cleaning roller on the pressure roller. I've had those develop a flat spot and make noise as well as causing jams. Jams and noise are primarily the first couple out after resting a while. The roller begins to re-round after warmed and using, then gets a flat again on resting. A quick test would be to simply remove it and run without. I've had a few running without that cleaning roller with no adverse effects.

But he tried another good fuser

Sandy what about startup, did you hear it when you turn the machine on? Can't you cheat cover to see/hear better where the noise is coming from?
Otherwise it does sounds like jumping gears so slim can be right.
