thermostat failing? did you mean, that the thermoswitches are triggering continously?

check the triac on the ac board, it can be short circuited.

Often the fuser wires will have open insulation causing shorts.
But the first thing is to put the new thermostat in.

Also you can monitor the fuser temp in SP mode.

Hmm... in that case the RCD should trigger

in german we call it "Fehlerstromschutzschalter", a device, which triggers, if not the same amount of current which flows to the device/circuit, returns. That would indicate, that some current flows the wrong way, maybe someone, who touch the line, per example; or neutral shorts against earth

"residual current device" should be the right translation, i hope

Here in the US we call it a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or GFCI - they're only required by code (in most states) if the outlet is within 6 feet (2 Meters) of a water source, or in a Kitchen of Bathroom.

Just FYI, I have also seen this problem where the leads from the fusing lamps have frayed and shorted to ground - took me a while to find what happened because the short was intermittent and would sometimes go away if you bumped the fuser assembly just right (like pulling it out to put new thermostats in)
