At one time one of the means of updating firmware was actually replacing the EEPROM. Even after the introduction of the PCMCIA cards for updates, the EEPROM was still socket mounted. There were also devices available that could write to and read from all types and sizes of ROM, PROM, EPROM and EEPROM devices. You could actually download an image file from Ricoh and use that to write to an EEPROM, erased EPROM or blank PROM.
