    SC990 Plotter_SA L1 VB

    Hey techs!

I've read several posts about the SC990 Error and really need more information. I'm working on a Gestetner DSC38, same machine as the Aficio 3800c.

The machine is giving me "SC990 - Plotter_SA L1 VB" and I've read that I should replace the drum, but i don't know how to tell which drum is causing the problem.

What info should i retrieve/reset in SP Mode?
Does anyone know what "Plotter_SA L1 VB" means?

Thank you _so_ much. You guys are amazing.

    SC990 is "Software Performance Error"
If a drum was causing this it would only be because the OPC coating was worn through to the point it was shorting charge bias and really confusing the computer - should be pretty obvious on a visual inspection and I would expect other SC codes before it throws a 990. More likely the HDD is starting to go. Other possible causes are the controller board and memory.

The drums are in good condition and not near their life expectancy. The error message is "plotter_sa L1 VB SC990"

I've cleared the memory and reinstalled the drums, still same problem. It completed two print jobs successfully. When i ran the same print job a third time, the message popped up immediately before printing. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My job may be on the line here, so thank you for the help _so_ much.

When you say disconnect the hard drive, will the machine still work without a HD? Should I try to reinstall the firmware before replacing the hard drive?

I still have no idea what this "plotter_sa L1 VB" means. I can't find any info.

The machine only has 265,000 copy count (110,000 color)

The drums look OK but I can't be sure. I know they are due for PM but if I order four drums and a HD, and this error still occurs, I'll be unemployed.

Many machines will operate w/o the HD connected but in a reduced functionality. i.e no duplex. But at least you may be able to see if the disconnect makes a difference to your symptom.
NOt familiar with that code either.

As to the firmware, that machine is pretty old and I doubt they have issued anything recent but I have: Controller M; Music A; NIB Q.

            Good luck on the job.

              HELP!!

Any new info? Hate to bump but tomorrow's going to be rough without some help. If i replace this hard drive and it still crashes, I'm going to be humiliated. Here's all the info i can give.

              SC990 : plotter_sa l1 vb

Drums look fine, cleared memory, restored factory machine defaults. I can run four or so print jobs (various sizes) then this error pops up during printing, but still finishes the current print job. Machine won't run any print jobs after that until reboot.

Current plan of action is to unplug the hard drive and see if i can still print. Either way I guess i'm going to reinstall the firmware on a new hard drive. The machine isn't even old though.. or is it? 262,000 total page count, 110k color

              Thanks

Good luck my friend. And in the end, if you have given your best, screw em. You were looking for a job when you found this one.

I'm purchasing a new HD. Will any 3.5" IDE Hard drive work? I'll probably purchase the 40gig size.

                  _thank you_

Looking at the manual..The HD is an Option on this machine. So this means that it will operate without it. And it is a 20G
