Ricoh Copier Stuck on Please Wait

I got a Ricoh 4002SP. When I turn it on, it shows the Please Wait screen for ever!

    Before that happens:
Formatted the HDD using SP Mode, restarted and all was fine.
the next day I came to office and turned it on, it got stuck on the Please Wait screen.

    Afterwards:
I tried turning it on with the HDD removed, didn't work.
Tried installing firmware, so formatted the SD Card as FAT and put the firmware files on the romdata folder, didn't install firmware and still same screen.
Formatted the HDD as FAT32 and guess what, didn't change anything.

Can't think of anything else to try and that machine is critical to my work. So any help is greatly appreciated.

one other thing to note, is the night after the SP Mode HDD format (before problem occurs), I turned the heater off accidentally and the environment was very cold for a few hours. No idea if it has anything with the problem, only thought is may be worth telling.
Also waited for a few hours and that screen didn't disappear.
is there any key combination etc to try, to get a log, diagnostic or maybe a reset, as I can't enter SP Mode on that screen.

    Hi
Are you sure the hdd is good? Some machine models will not function without a hdd. Also if it has removeable memory remove, clean the contacts and reset fully. Maybe worth a try.

        Thx for the reply.
Yes the HDD is fine, as I put it in PC, recognized and was formatted easily.
However I'm not sure formatting as Fat32 was right!
Also I put the SD Card in Card Reader and PC recognized it immediately. I will clean it too.

Do not do anything to the SD card. It might contains the function firmware such as Print, Scan and FAX.

it happened to me twice on 4002, once it was a card full of dust at the top right, near the fan, the other time I solved it by temporarily removing the fax card, formatting the disk and reinstalling the fax card

Tried that; Removed the SD Card, backed up the contents, Reformat as FAT, copied the data to it, cleaned it and put it on the machine. Didn't work unfortunately.
BTW, there was an SD Card in Slot 2 and none in Slot 1 in the first place. Are those Slots serving different purposes?

There is a hidden firmware key that cannot be copied off. When you reformatted, you erased that key. You now have to purchase the service spare. Look for a part number on the label.

                    So I messed up
OK I'm going to order one. however, I'm also curious, is the SD Card absolutely necessary for the machine to work? or it's possible to somehow run things from the HDD (even temporarily)?

When a Ricoh MFP see a "NEW" HDD, one that does not have the MFP's identifier stored on it, It preps it for use on that MFP.

If the card has a label that identifies it as FIRMWARE then it is necessary.

try this unplug hard drive and remove fax board if it has one. copier will boot up so copy mode is enable. If comes up with same message then could be communication problem between controller and operation board. try op panel first if that doesn't work then controller board.

that machine launched in 2012. look to replace it as the 54 series and up are way better and less headache. we as a company a few years ago canceled all 5002 and older models from contracts. we can buy 54 series copiers for the price of an op panel and a maintenance kit for an 02.
