    MP C2550--Bypass Jamming

Hello everyone, again. I was wondering if anyone else might be having issues with the MP C2550/2050/2030 models? I've a new install that will not auto-detect the paper size in the bypass. You feed through an 8.5x11 in the df, the bypass pulls the paper and feeds it out to the internal finisher. Before the paper feeds to the finisher, though, the machine says it jammed in B and C. The jam code recorded on the SMC is 57--registration sensor. If I set the size to what ever i place in the bypass then the jam does not occur. Is the bypass on this machine not "smart" enough?

This machine has a length sensor on the bypass tray. It sounds as though the acuator is either broken or not interacting with the sensor.

I noticed that the bypass label on the MPC2500 (similiar machine) shows paper to be fed short edge first. Have you changed the paper orientation with the bypass set for APS?

I would have though that the combination of side guides (width sensors) and the length sensor would take care of that?

when place papers into bypass tray, you should look at the op. panel display in small words: select the "#" to set up paper size. Otherwise, it does not know.

Can you check in "user tools" the paper format & orientation that was set for the bypass. Selecting the bypass and pressing "#"key (or Enter) you will access the bypass tray menu.

Thanks for the responses, fellas. The first reply is the issue (length sensor). What I forgot to mention in the post was that I had tried every which way to feed, including selecting the correct paper sizes for any that I placed in the bypass, setting it in System Settings, pretty much the standard stuff. What I didn't do was take the advice of a fellow tech......K.I.S.S., or Keep It Simple, Stupid.. Essentially he told me to take the "blinders" off. Doesn't happen often that a machine defeats me, but something about this one just put a bug in me!

You are right. This bug is in all of us. K.I.S.S is the ideal...but sometimes we don't follow this simple rule

It doesn't help having the Service Manual rejigged and no long containing the detailed description for the machine.

To view this you now have to have the WICE training notes

What was the exact problem? Stuck actuator? Sensor moved? Would be nice to know for future reference, if it's happened once it will probably happen again.

The customer had placed a piece of paper on the bypass tray to help them remember what orientation to place letterhead properly. The tape used to hold this paper in place just slightly covered the slot through which the length sensor popped up through. The actuator could come up, just not far enough. Cut the tape out of the path and all is well!
