    DSC338 (B147) copy quality

I have this 338 that makes great full color copies, no misalignment. But black/ white looks like crap. It looks like there is a leading line in the sub-scan direction. In other words, vertical lines are doubled in the direction of the paper path. On this machine, two diodes are used for mono copies and only one for color. So it looks like the two lds are not aligned.
I have run 5993 LP adjust until I am cyan in the face. I have reset the mirror motors, then 5993. When I run a test pattern 5997 #14 (single dot trimming pattern, looks great: #15 (two dot trimming pattern), I can see the two vertical lines, separate, not overlaped. Not by much but enough to cause the distortion. and the blacks in general are ok but the grays are mottled not gray.

I am thinking the laser unit is fried. Any ideas out there to troubleshoot this?

It may be possible that the beam pitch has gone out.
The adjustment is 2-109 page 136 of the SM.
Unfortunately it also says input the data on the laser housing which I guess you might not have - maybe it is on the factory data sheet.
        Good luck.

I uncovered the laser and got the numbers, input them in 2 and 3 and ran the 5993 and got a complete and result 010101. Something is rotten in Denmark.

Have you run through TSB 34 procedures? It's a 9 page bulletin...very comprehensive.

If ya need it say the word and it's yours.

            Adding:
If I understand correctly the shift is in the direction of feed?? Lead edge to trail edge? What about the black transfer roller and bushings? The transfer unit only rises for full color copies thus changing the angle and pressure on the black transfer roller. Had an issue sort of like that once a long while back.

Relax! This firmware injection won't hurt...but it will take 45 minutes.

Right . I thought about that. What sticks in my mind is that the mono is two beams and the fc is single beam and that the FC is perfect and mono is not. The diff is the angle of the double beam.
Or as we say in Fairfax.
              wtf?
