    240W - Plotbase Error

Hey guys, got called out to this one today. When the client opens Plotbase v3.3.025, they get an error message stating, "Post Office Register Failed: 10106". Also, once loaded, "Plotter Not Found" is displayed in the upper right of Plotbase.

I went through the normal motions of rebooting both PC and machine, but of course that didn't work. I found some stuff in the Global Knowledge Base about making sure all the proper ports were open and available. Windows firewall is off, but they did have an out of date version of AVG Network Edition. That might be blocking something.

Any suggestions would be a great help...

Never had a problem with AVG on these, but if it was out of date you may have something growing in there...

I have found on mine that windows itself chokes and dies about every 2 1/2 - 3 years and sometimes it's simpler to start from scratch. Go figure...

Well, I called and talked with the client that uses the machine more than anyone else in the office and she spilled the beans. The Plotbase server did have a virus on it a month or so ago, but she said that after they got it cleaned up, the wide format would still print.

I went by there yesterday and took another close look at the PC and found that SNMP would not stay turned on. I would start SNMP, the Services Console, but it would shut right back down with no error message. I uninstalled the SNMP service, through Windows Components, and that took care of that.

Port 80 looked to be open, but why couldn't I load a web page through IE, but could ping Google from a command prompt? I really need to go back and perform netstat -ano .

Also, there were problems with the LPR port, so I had to reinstall that.

And speaking of Netstat... I downloaded a copy TCPView, from MS's website. It's basically netstat -ano with live updates. So I will probably use that too. Either way, I'm either going to have to perform a clean install on the thing or at the very leasy a repair from the install menu.

Couple of things you need ,
First check the Driver or the Ratio Board in the Pc , update that if possible .
Second thing is you need to disable every firewall you have , as well as the Antiviruses .
and last is try to upgrade to Plotbase 3.6 SP3 or 3.71 if you can .,
that would take care of that issue .

Disabling the firewall and virus protection on a windows machine is a really bad idea. Someone did a test with a clean XP SP1 install and connected it to the internet unshielded. It was less than 1 minute before the pc was zombie'd. The results are marginally better with SP2 or 3 and the firewall down, but the computer is still going to get hacked.

If you need to disable the firewall for testing pull it off the network and use a crossover cable. Add the necessary exceptions to the firewall and restart it. You DON'T want the customer's IT director pointing his finger at your hardware saying "It all started with this machine..." It will not end well.

what you want to do is Change the IP address for that PC to static , never put in the DNS , so that PC will never access the internet, it would work on the local network only .
make sure its NOT on that Company's domain , keep it on a workgroup.
Antiviruses and Firewalls Disable the APACHE server that plotbase uses to process plots , it considers it as a threat and keep shutting the whole printing operation down .

I agree with shadow, you need XP SP2 , and you better off with Plotbase 3.6 SP3 at least , 3.71 would be the best.
