I agree - I hate to see any versions get phased out. I, too, have had many instances where the PCL5, RPCS, or Mini Driver was the only way to get success.
Think of it from the vendor's standpoint, though. As time goes on, and more and more models are introduced, it makes for that many more machines to write drivers for.
It costs a bunch of money to maintain all those drivers, so it makes sense that support for the older ones will start to slowly drop off.
Ricoh is far from alone in this approach. Most other vendors are doing the very same thing.
