Try unplugging the hard drive. power off, unplug from the wall, disconnect the hdd. Then turn the copier back on, it might restart with limited functions. If so, then power the copier off, unplug it from the wall, reconnect the hard drive, and power back on.

if it doesn't resart, replace the hdd.
if it does, back up the address book, and replace the hdd.

Disconnect the ADF, disconnect the finisher, pull out the paper drawers. Disconnect any other perif.

Could also be the controller board's had it. Not as likely as the HDD, but machines that came out at the same time as this one all suffer from controller issues.

just curious if an off-the-shelf will work in this model. I've had good luck except for the double HDD models

Works well - swapped the hdd's a few times with "unofficial" hdd's. Once I had to degrade the HDD via jumper to a different mode (I think it was on a MP6000).

As long as you fit a pair they should be OK. Don't think we've ordered ANY Ricoh HDD's in the last 10 years! (Other than Warranty) Just make sure you set the jumpers to "Master" on a new single drive or match the connections on twin drives.
