    MP171 phantom jams

Im having some fun with a MP171 that has 2 PS480 paper feed trays on it. So it has 3 paper trays and intermittant jams on the bottom or 3rd tray ONLY.

Its not jamming as such, more like a total non-feed. Open the side door and there is never any paper there, however if i take out the tray right after a jam and turn the feed roller it definately picks up the paper. So its not the feed roller or the friction pad.

I tried a new clutch, no fix. So I swapped the 2 paper feed units over (I mean the entire PS480 unit). So now trays 2 and 3 are swapped but its still jamming on tray 3 only...tray 2 that had the original fault is working fine.

It cant be the paper trays....its gotta be the machine itself but i dunno where to start now. Its like the machine isnt telling the paper tray motor to feed, but its still waiting for paper so it jams!

So it has to be the 171 itself - this is the second tiime ive had this problem, the first time we swapped out the machine for another but id really like to know whats going on. Anyone else seen this or have any ideas? Im thinking a faulty board....it cant be a connector or wiring cause the fault didnt transfer to tray 2 with the feed unit......

    Thanks for the help!

I don't think that this is a problem with the machine. The PS480 is well known for paper (mis-)feeding issues. I think the friction pad has been modified but I can't find the bulletin. It's also recommendable to tighten the paper side end end fences with screws. You can also try to increase the force of that spring that lifts up the bottom plate inside the tray.

Good call Jan, I went searching and found bulletins for the paper bank (PS480) under the MP161 model. Attached are the 3 relevant ones. The third one references a cut in serial number that allows 2 units to be installed simultaneously (modified), maybe possible these trays are pre mod?

Cheers guys -I tried another machine on the 2 drawers and still jammed from tray 3....So out of desperation and not thinking of anything else to do to isolate the fault I swapped over the 2 paper drawers themselves. Seems to be working fine now...

I put the screws in and also checked the serial numbers - all good - and im going to put in some new feed rollers and modded friction pads anyway just to be sure.

Thanks again, youve saved me a headache!
