    Ricoh 3501 only receives faxes

    Hi all

Got a brand new straight out of the box Ricoh 3501 which works perfectly.

I fitted a fax 5501 and it only receives faxes. When I send a fax it takes the document through the feeder and displays 'dialing' but I cannot hear any dial tone. In the logs it appears as waiting, after a few minutes the machine displays a transmission error or something like that.

I have removed the fax and completely disassembled all boards and rebuilt making sure all connections are good.

Is there a country setting I have to enter in service mode? the instructions don't say anything about this though.

First make sure the line cord is in LINE not FAX. Then send a manual fax. Press OnHookDial, if you hear a dial tone, dial the number but dont press Start, just listen. If you hear another fax answer, press Start.

Good suggestions - sometimes you may need to disable the dialtone detection (I think it's user switch 22 bit 0).

Not sure if it relates to this model, but there was a recent bulletin warning of fax unit mounting screws shorting against the fax pcb. Worth checking the length of the screws and insulating the edges of the pcb with tape?

Good call tcs, this was that model. Symptoms are slightly different but worth checking.
