Yes the latent image is good/solid. And the transfer contacts are making ... contact. So which is most likely: transfer roller assembly, transfer HVT, or something else?

Could be the belt itself. What happens when you crash stop the machine and take the belt unit out? Good image on it?It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

Yes, I've got a good latent image. Less than 1/2 the image is transfered, probably by physical contact of the paper only.
I've just been digging through the manual, and I found that it has a worm gear drive that positions the transfer roller. Since I have only rarely seen a completely bad transfer roller, I think that this transfer contact drive seems like a better suspect. Have you seen any trouble with these? Is it possible that in my investigations that I have mis-assembled the secondary transfer assembly such that it won't shift? I've found figure 46-16, B223 1199 paper transfer contact motor. Does that sound about right? The parts manual just describes it as "DC motor".

First of all you don't say if it is all colours or just the yellow is the transfer producing a banding effect ok then poor several times say over a A3 copyComment

I'm pretty sure that is where your problem lies. The color transfer rollers are cammed away from the pcu's in b/w mode, sounds like they're stuck. I would pull out the itb unit and manually rotate the mechanism in the rear of it and see if there is any binding and also do an output check on the contact motor.Comment
