Type 3030 G3 fax + G3 Interface Unit install trouble

Main fax unit works fine, installed G3 Interface Unit and extra RAM all at the same time. Cannot get any incoming line tone from line 2 (G3-2) during any tone checks in service mode modem checks although I can hear the relay clicking on/off so I know hardware is being recognized.

Installation instructions read: Print System Parameter list & make sure G3-2 is listed as an option. Under [Option] only EXMEM shows up.

"Enter fax SP mode and set Bit 1 of Communication Switch 16 to '1' if you install the single port" - so Switch 16 now reads 00000111 (default was 000000101).

Note: When first powered up message on screen read 'SRAM data has been cleared due to (??) memory error'. After powering down and back up that error has not returned.
In an effort to make it work I did perform an SRAM memory clear as well which had no effect. Have not removed extra RAM but don't see this as being the problem.

This behaviour is normal when you power up for the first time after installing the fax unit.

    76543210 - bit
    00000111 - value

But according to fax sm bit 2 is not used so I would expect it to look like:

    76543210 - bit
    00000011 - value

Unless bits 2-7 are reserved for factory use only (it does say not to change them).

I hate bitswitches they suck LOL.

I think I am correct with bit 1 instead of bit 3. Only one additional line has been added. Did try the bit 3 as well to no avail.
It would be great if I had another Interface Unit to try but no such luck. I doubt it is defective but there is always that possibility. We mostly deal with Sharp and have no tech support for this product unfortunately.

        Bit Switches

        Hi
        Try communications switch 16, set bits 1 & 3 to 1.
        Should look like 00001010.
        Thats fax SP 1-104-24.
        These enable the second line.
Sorry I haven't worked out how to cut and paste here yet but have attached the page of the manual.

Thank you for your responses, MUCH appreciated.
Customer location is 50 minutes away so I had him try the setting changes himself (he's pretty capable). We tried Communications Switch 16
          0001010, 0001111, and 0000111.
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but on the System Parameter List printout it shows the setting for 0F (memory address) being changed (the setting listed in SP mode as bit 16) but farther down on the printout is what appears to be actual memory address 16. Is this what we should be changing? (I doubt it)

Q2) we don't need to reboot system for changes to take effect, correct? I just noticed in the setup instructions for AF-2027 optional G3 unit it says to turn the main power switch off/on.
Q3) He's trying to test it by sending from line 1 to line 2. Is this an effective method? After about 6 rings we do get a pick-up tone but it will not complete the action.

I will go back out (tomorrow?) and check it out more myself.
Attached is part of the SysParameter list.

            UPDATE

            12/15/07
Went back out finally, removed optional RAM (canram - Mem Experts) and both lines began working with the Communications Switch 16 set to 00001010. The optional G3 line still doesn't show up in the System Parameter list under 'options'. Customer is happy that at least it is working now but looks like I need to do something else, only line ONE can be directed to the PT280 upper output tray option. Need to get G3-2 to become configureable so I can assign a phone # to it, etc. Don't know about the RAM deal.

Thanks again guys, I don't think I could have got the switch set right without your help FRIDGEMAGNET. Much appreciated. I've got the 3030 service manual but not the fax info.
