I know this is an old thread that I stumbled on tonight but I had to comment. copiertech1980 I am happy to see that you found the special service mode access to reprogram the serial #. Boards like this are to help people like copiertech1980 that was having a problem and looking for assistance from other techs that might have had the problem in the past. The problem is that you have people like jeffreyozz that don't have the experience or the knowlegde to help with the problem but feel the need to run thier mouth about not being an authorized dealer. I think that jeffreyozz should get himself a life and leave boards like this to people that are looking for help and those that can provide help.

I work for a manufacturer and dont worry about unauthorized techs taking customers from us. We will lose customers to them and we will get new customers from them-thats how it goes. There are plenty of customers for all!

I'm all for helping someone out with technical info (even end users on occasion), but what copiertech1980 was asking for is out of bounds. The ability to go into special service mode and change the serial number opens the door to all sorts of problems. Not that this particular person had nefarious intentions (needed to reinput the original serial number), but what about those that want to scam a buyer by changing the serial and zeroing out the meter? No different then changing the VIN on a car and rolling back the odometer. No thanks, we don't want any part of that.

Just discovered this topic: I think it's impolite not to help another tech, even if the question for the factory SP is indeed a delicate thing we shouldn't spread too easy. But as a professional one could ask why he swapped the NV Ram in the first place and give him a chance to explain. Depending on his answere I don't see a problem to send him the information via PM - like the stuff isn't that hard to find in the WWW anyway^^

One thing that needs to be remembered is that these machines are delicate, and on top of that there are certain things that the factory does not want anyone else messing with. I can change the spark plugs on my truck, sure, but if I would need to make changes to the fuel management system do you think that a licensed technician is going to just hand over that information?

Sure, the information is easily obtained on the web. If that is the case then why was the question posted here anyway? Was it to get a quick fix? Or was it that the tech could not find the information and was trying to cover his own arse?

I am or never have been against giving out information. One of the requirements to this is that the person I am dealing with has exhausted every effort to find the information. I find it funny that an old post like this gets attention....more than likely because someone else ran into the same block and got upset about it.

No matter how you put it, trained personnel are trained personnel. They, like myself, are protecting the company and themselves by not giving out information that the company does not want everyone and their brother to have. This is why the manual states to call the manufacturer in the event of this SC code. The only reason that there is information out there is that someone posted it up after their battle to get the same stuff. As I stated earlier, its funny that this post gets attention after almost four years. I was doing my job protecting technicians that have done the training and are certified to work on these machines. I do not necessarily agree with companies like Ricoh, but modifying serial numbers is something that they should be involved with. Microsoft does it, and eventually there will be no way one can make changes like this without calling the manufacturer. I am done now
