Ricoh has a tendency to overengineer. Another example is the flaming stink they have turned the fuser in those units into. It was originally nice and simple and the biggest help was chaging the scrapers. Beyond that it gets overcomplicated.

agreed - it used to be a 5 minute rebuild, but then they added the 2nd lamp, extra wimpy thermistors, and made it a pain in the 'nads to work on... and the web sends shivers down my spine.

I've made different experiences with keeping the 2nd blade outside. Some machines ran fine and slightly better than the machines with the 2nd blade inside. On the other hand we had problems that the charge roller became dirty much faster sometimes without the 2nd blade. I guess it's depending about the paper quality - the more dust it produces, the more it makes sense to use that 2nd blade.

Well, some machines had to run without the 2nd blade because that little plastic bushing found a way into my vac

Finally and especially after Ricoh changed the springs, we are always using the 2nd blade.
