[Dead] Ricoh C5501 - Can't copy, print, or scan. No Web

    Hello,

We have two Ricoh C5501 copiers here in Afghanistan. Both copiers are only 8 months old and have been working flawlessly since I set them up. One of the copiers stopped working yesterday. The copier boots up normaly, but it doesn't make copies, printer shows offiline, scanner button does nothing, and web interface gets a page cannot be displayed. I can ping the unit and the touch interface is working, thats about it. Is is possible the internal hard drive has died? Where would you guys start? I'm a network admin not a copier tech, I only have the admin and end user manuals, no service manual. I would have called a service tech by now, but can't find any Ricoh techs in Kabul.

Is the machine displaying any SC codes at the bottom left of the touch screen? Does it ever come to the "Ready" condition and beep, or does it just say "Please Wait"?
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

It gets past the please wait sceen and goes right into the sceen with all the copy options. It doesn't have any sc codes in the bottom. In comparing to my working copier, the only difference I see is the big green start button is illumated in red. The working machine is green.

Are you sure that what you are pinging is the copy machine? Recently I went on a service call, printed out a config page and pinged the address on the config page and got a good reply, but could not get the WIM to load. After a while, I determined that another computer on the network pulled that IP address from the DHCP server because the network board on the copy machine had gone bad and was no longer being detected on the network at that IP address. Pull the network cable out of the machine and ping the address again, and if you get a reply, then it is obviously not the copy machine answering. A bad network board should have nothing to do with not being able to make copies, however, so perhaps there is another problem. Was there a power surge or lightning strike that could have fried something in the copy machine?

I'm positive I'm pinging the correct device. When I turn the copier off the pings timeout, when I turn it on I get replys.

Next thing to try would probably be to reload firmware, and if it still doesn't work format HDD. Does the fax work?

Can you give me the procedure to reload the firmware? I guess i could clone the HDD from the working model.

There are two places the machine can say Please Wait. The initial coloured screen and then at the top of the screen when the machine comes up to the copy screen. Does it ever say ready?

Go into user tools and double check you are pinging the correct IP. It would seem that it is the correct IP if you get no reply when the copier is off, but, It pays to be CERTAIN.

I'd start with unplugging the HDD & see if you can make a copy.

There are 4-5 screws that hold the controller assy. in - usually there are arrows etched on the plate to point out which ones. It's where you plug the network cable in & should just slide out. The HDD will slide out with the assy. NOTE - I haven't had any electrical issues on this model yet, so my directions might be completely wrong.

If you do have to replace the HDD, you can backup the Address book from the working machine & restore it to the dead one. (WIM/ Addy book/ Maintenance) You'll also have to reset the stamp data - in the latter Sp5xxx's.

                        Good luck!

TonerMunkeh - I see now which "please wait" message you are talking about. Its supposed to show near the top of the screen. Interestingly it never says anything. The place where its supposed to say "please wait" then "ready" is completely blank. It never shows anything and it never gives the ready beep either.

Everyone Else - Trust me I'm pinging the correct IP.

I'm gonna pull the HD and see what happens. Will reply with my findings.

Pulling the hard drive did the trick!!! The copier function now works. So which of these are viable options...

                              1. Can I buy a new hitachi drive and clone the working drive with acronis
                              2. Will ricoh ship me a preloaded replacement drive?
                              3. Install a blank hard drive in the copier and will the firmware reload the sofware for me?
                              4. Can I download an image of the hard disk from ricoh?

What does the copier tech handbook say?
