    Ricoh Aficio 1022 Scanning resolution

How can I scan an a4 sheet in greyscale at a resolution of 300-400dpi? It will not allow me to set it greater than 215dpi. I am scanning music and it needs the higher resolution. The documentation says it should scan at up to 600dpi. I am using WIN XP SP3 and have the latest driver downloaded from the Ricoh website. Thanks

Are you scanning as an image (TIFF) or as a PDF? Generally, PDF will give you a smaller file size than TIFF will. You may want to change the original type for the file to Text as well. The default resolution can be set in User Tools and Scanner Features, but it can also be set at job level from the op panel in Scanner mode.

The TWAIN driver for this model was always a little strange, but it should work for the most part. I don't remember if you could also set the dpi in the application itself also.

The program I was using (neuratron photoscore) scans directly into it without saving the file as a specific format. I have also tried MS Word "insert picture from scanner". The TWAIN interface window does not seem to know about the output format. There are just options to set type and resolution etc on the window, much as a dedicated scanner would. It allows you to set B&W, half tone of grey scale then allows you to move a slider for resolution from its default of 215dpi but on greyscale, it always goes back to 215 it it is set to anything higher.
If I set it to B&W or Half tone it will allow a resolution of 419dpi. I have noticed a box on the window which is labelled "Data" and has what I presume is the size of the scanned image in it. This seems to go to a maximum of about 4.27Mb otherwise it reduces the resolution until it has returned to that value.
If I reduce the paper size from A4, it allows the dpi to be set higher until the data is 4.27Mb so memory space would seem to be the limiting factor. The Ricoh has 96Mb fitted, can more of this be made available to increase the amount available to the scanned image?

The issue then lies with the programme and not the machine. All TWAIN does is work as a middle-man between the device and the software. The machine settings will have no effect on the output in this case as everything is a software setting.

          Thanks again for the reply.
I have now tried 4 different windows programs and all get the same result so I am unable to see how it could be the software.
My guess would be that the firmware on the 1022 is somehow limiting the datasize to 4.27Mb.
Do you think this could be possible?
Is it likely to be a basic program restriction or is that likely to be all the spare storage in the machine?
Has anyone managed to do a scan with a datasize greater than 4.27Mb - ideally about three times that value.
