    toners and developers

    hi to all,

i just want to learn more about copiers. just curios about some things.

    1) may i know why there are different toners and developers for the different models of ricoh aficio digital b/w models? why can't they just use one? anyway they all look the same, black. hehehe.
    2) does it have different toners because it has different developers? if it is, then for example can i use a type 18 developer and its toner for aficio 1045 to an aficio 2045 machine which is using type 26 developer?
    3) is the toner negetively or positively charged? what's the composition of toners?
    4) are developers negatively or positively charged also? what's the composition of developers?
    5) what happens to the developer when it becomes weak and needs replacement? why does it become weak?
    6) and lastly what's the composition of waste toner? why is there a waste toner, since it is supposed to be recycled?

i asked a few techs about this but they don't know the answer.
thank you for taking time reading this thread.
    hope you can provide answers.
    thank you.

    Re: toners and developers

    Here's a start:

Don't you have enough problems throughout the day without trying mixing up different toner with different developer? There have been a couple of times when totally by accident the result was positive. But 95% of the time the results are disastrous. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

The first ingredient is always polyethylene (plastic). Black toner usually has carbon black in the ingredients somewhere. The rest of the chemistry is way over my head. =^..^=

Another difference between toner is the temperature at which it will fuse to the paper without running. Obviously a high volume machine needs a higher fusing temperature as more pages are going through at one time, while a slower machine can make due with fusing at a lower temperature, though we're not talking a wide range of temperatures: maybe a ten degree Centigrade difference.

            thank you.
            1) Different toners for different speeds of machine.
            2) No
            3) If the charge is positive voltage, toner is negative and vise versa.
            4) See answer 3
            5) Think of developer as a multi-pointed star and toner falls between the points. As the developer agitates, the toner becomes statically charged.
Developer is worn when the points wear down enough that it can't charge the toner.
            6) Waste toner has paper dust in it. Machines that recycle toner separate the toner from the dust. Color machines don't recycle the toner because there is no way to separate the colors.

At least this is how it was described to me.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?
