    MP171SPF not printing some documents

    Hi all,
I have a MP171spf at an office that will not print some documents that are sent as attachments (word). The thing is most of there attachments they can print but every so often they get some that just will not print at all. The green light on the mp171spf flashes and on the pc it says print job printed ok but nothing prints but they can print the document on a mpc2500 at another location in the building. Also they might have another word attachment with say 50 pages and it will only print the first 7 pages and then stop. Print preview shows all the pages as being ok and i tried changing settings like sub paper size and auto continue on and off just to see if a paper mismatch occurs but the same thing happens. I copied it to my memory stick and tried printing it on another mp171spf at a different customer and it still wouldn't print and then they said that they get some documents that sometimes will not print. I have tried all the drivers on the ricoh site with no success. If its unable to print i would at least like to give a reason why to there IT department even though I don't think they'll be too happy. I have attached a document for you to look at that Will not print. The customer deleted most of the info on there but like i say it still won't print. Thanks to everyone that offers any advice.

What driver are you using to print? If using PCL 6, try using PCL 5, or PostScript if the machine has it. Office docs sometimes have issues with PCLXL (6) drivers. You may also want to turn on Error Reporting in Printer Settings in User Tools, that way if the machine does have an issue with the print commands it will print an error page instead of just deleting the job.

make sure you configure the port to LPR(with queue name lp) not raw. if its set to raw it spools at the copier(not the pc) and could be larger than the machine can handle.

        In Microsoft Word 2010
Click on Office Button| Prepare | Inspect Document |

This will clear out any hidden special charactures from the document. Pressing two or three keys at the same time on the keyboard can generate unwanted hidden charactures. I can show you how this is done with special keys.

Try and print the document again.

I don't think it's a RAM issue, the document printed out fine on my little Ricoh SP C222DN printer, with half as much RAM as your 171SPF has, a much slower processor, and using a PCL6 driver on Windows 7 64-bit and Word 2007.

Sorry I don't have a real answer for you, but it did work on a smaller machine with lower specs.

Interesting first entry. You dig up a thread that's 10 months old, and start yelling at people with 'advice' that doesn't help.....
Anyway, having noticed this resurrected thread, I couldn't help but fool around with it a little.
I have 2 printers here in my home office an Aficio MP 161, and a little Oki colour Laser, and neither printer would print the 4th page of this document. I tried converting it to PDf to see what the result would be, and interestingly, page 4 was not printed / converted - meaning this 4 page Doc became a 3 page doc. Just curious as to the possible causes of this issue, and wondering if the original poster ever got it sorted out?

Re: MP171SPF not printing some documents

Hello everyone, No sorry I never got to solve the problem. All i can say is that with this model some email attachments just will not print. The customer moved the mfp to another department to use mainly as a scanner. I tried to get the customer to give me some info as to the origin of the documents such as if it was scanned then sent as an attachment or created in a word application and then sent but all they said was they have this problem from only 1 customer that sends them stuff from russia. I haven't had the chance to try anything since the original post because as i said they moved the mfp and they said not to worry, but still it'll be good to find a solution or a reason why it doesn't print. thanks again.

This is also interesting, as I looked at it again, and maybe the reason it worked for me is that opening it up in Word 2007, it only shows 3-pages, and states in the lower corner, Page 1 of 3. I don't see a 4th page at all.

I guess the question is, is this supposed to have 4 pages, or 3?

So the plot thickens...I am also using MS Office 2007 which I get 4 viewable pages (and only 3 print); However, when I open it up with LibreOffice Writer in Ubuntu, There are 5 viewable pages but the formatting is a little out of whack.
The issue must be related to the way, or program it was created with, although the explanation for it is beyond my scope

Very strange indeed. I looked at the properties of the file, and in the properties it states that there is 4 pages. MS Word 2007 only shows 3 for me, and doesn't give any sign that there should be more.
