[Misc] MPC2550 Screeching Noise when copying

The screeching noise gets louder the longer the machine is copying. Running the ITB in Service Mode produces a very similar sound, so I changed the complete ITB Assy with one from another machine that doesn't make the noise, but I still have the problem. I have also tried a different Black PCU, as that is always in contact with the ITB. I have removed the ITB cleaning unit as well, but the noise persists.
Has anyone had this problem? or does anyone have any ideas please.

Replace just the ITB cleaner unit.

I have run the machine without the ITB cleaner unit, and the the noise is still there.

try using output mode sp 5-804 turn on and off motor clutches etc on their own and in groups this way you should be able to isolate the faulty drive pcu fuser etc hope this helps

Im sure itll be one of the drums dude - seems to be real common for me once they hit 40 or 50 k they squeel a bit. When I put new ones in I always put a bit of grease on the 2 brass bushing....seems to solve it for me.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I have used output mode sp 5-804 to run items like the pcu drives, and the noise is there when I run the ITB, but changing the whole ITB assy does not stop the noise, nor does removing the ITB cleaning unit. As the noise is there when running black copies, I don't think it can be one of the colour pcu's as they do not turn, or make contact with the ITB when making black copies, or am I wrong on that? Have tried a black pcu/dev ass'y from another machine and that made little difference. I will try a new black ass'y and try the grease suggestion.

Smee, could you tell me what brass bushings you are referring to please?

When you replace a PCU, you need to take off one plastic end plate - or housing. Its the end with the connector on it that also gets removed when replacing. This end housing or plate has 2 brass bushes on it that the drum slides onto and a lot smaller shaft slide into.....I thing the small shaft is an eath or something? The bushes are really obvious when you have the PCU out....I always dab a tniy bit of Barrietta grease on the new on them when replacing. Hope thats some help!

Thanks Smee. I'll check that on the PCDU's and post the result.

If you think it is the pcdu you might want to check out TSB # 037

I have this same problem and haven't been able to fix it either. The noise only happens when the ITB is turning, not the PCU's... I replaced the ITB unit and it went away for a little while but came back. Still haven't figured out what it is yet. Luckily the customer isn't too worried since it is in a room by itself and is used mainly for a recieving fax machine. If I ever get the time and find it I will let you know. Please post if you find the fix for this noisemaker.

Thanks for that info Counsel. I have now looked up the TSB re lube bar, I don't think my customers usage is as per the bulletin, but I will order the new springs to give if a try. Like Ucinn's machine, I think it stems from the ITB rather than the PCDU's, as the noise starts when I run the ITB in service mode, but i've already tried a different ITB assembly & ITB cleaning unit, so it can't be that, can it?

The noise is caused by the tension springs inside the PCDU. All I did was cut it short by 1mm and the noise went away. Also, lubed it with the toner of that color.

I don't understand how that can be causing my problem, but copiers can be strange things at times. I will try cutting the springs when the new ones I've ordered arrive, then if it all goes pear shaped I've got replacements. I will let you know how I get on!
