Optics need to be cleaned maybe? Take off the platen glass, and check the mirrors by shining a flashlight across them at a 45-90 degree angle. Often they get frosted with all kinds of crap and it takes a toll on the scan quality.

The real judge is going to be the quality of the copies. If the copies look good then the issue lies elsewhere. Bad RAM (this is an old machine), HDD, or even controller. You may also want to check that you're working with up to date (well, as up to date as this machine gets) firmware.

x2 on the optics, but I also recently just had a problem on the same model which was using Scanrouter (although I don't know if it had anything to do with Scanrouter). I cleaned the optics, copies looked perfect, etc, but scans were very grainy. I fixed it by doing a memory clear on the scanner

Scanner memory clear is SP5-801-9, and "yes" it will set all scan settings back to default, so they will need to be set back like they were. For example, the destination (Email or folder), Resolution. If using Scanrouter software, then you will need to remove the I/O device, then add it again, and perhaps a few others.
As for updating firmware on this model, it is quite involved, and requires some hardware be connected that you will not have, and software you can't get, and "no" you can't download it.
If you're not familiar with the scan settings, and networking, etc. on this machine, I would not recommend the memory reset, or you will find yourself in some serious trouble with your customer
