Most of the time I've had this it's been the drum, they're only good for 150k maximum.
Check image quality, How are the solids? Is there any background?
Is the code displayed constantly or will it reset by cycling the power?
If the code resets then first run a single copy, does it display it immediately after that copy? If it doesn't then do a run of 10 and see it it chucks the code up at the end. The reason for doing this is that by default the machine does an image density check after 10 copies or at the end of a run of more than 10 copies. This may have been altered to a different figure.
Have a look at the SC code log, has the machine been logging other SC codes that may not have been shown on the display? SC350 (ID sensor pattern test error) is a good sign that it's the drum.
Other things I've had SC990 for:-
*Mag roller coated in hard toner (especially if the customer is using el cheapo unbranded toner), give it a good clean with a scrap of paper and a little bit of dev - Also make sure that the mylar guide on top isn't fouling the mag roller.
*Dev unit entrance seal/PCU entrance seal damaged leading to toner contamination of the laser unit. In this instance SC990 is also accompanied with SC322 or SC326. The only thing you can do is a careful and throrough clean of the laser unit, sometimes you luck out, sometimes you don't. Afterwards do laser laser beam pitch adjustment for 400dpi and 600dpi.
