For transporting a MP4500 or similar, can it be placed into a SUV laying down?

I sometimes would like to move a mid-sized 35 or 45 cpm machine in an SUV but it is too tall to fit standing up. If I removed the drum, dv unit, and maybe the fuser, could it be transported if I slide it in on it's back? Or would that mess up the optics in any way? Or something else I'm not thinking of? Thanks

If you like paper jams, service calls, print/copy quality issues : Then it's a good idea to lay the machine on it's back. If not, just rent a vehicle in which the machine can be placed standing up.

Only if you're taking it to the dump. You'd be better off removing the cassette base, getting you about 12" in height. It should load properly then. No, never lay it on it's back. The circuit boards on the back will get smashed to little bitty bits. Any loose toner will dump into the laser, and everywhere else. It must be kept upright if you plan on using it as a copier ever again. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

        Remove the ADF.
Had a customer move a color machine on it's back and wanted me to repair it on a $200.00 budget.
        Yeah right.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

Appreciate the inputs, yes, I would remove the adf, but I thought for the first two drawers of these models, yes you can reomve the paper trays, but not the frame that holds them. So you can remove the framing also? That would give me enough room to transport upright in a SUV but please verify.

The two drawer cassette base or standard cabinet can be added, so it can be removed also: http://printmail.oregonstate.edu/sit...Poster_rev.pdf See the installation instructions for the accessory, then do it in reverse. =^..^=

Sorry, I should really elaborate on that. No, don't do it, you'll most likely destroy the optics, laser and just about everything else.If you're a dealer then you'll have noticed that all machines are delivered in an upright position. They are then set up in this same position, delivered like that and then remain upright for the duration of their life. There's a reason for this. But hey, put it on its back in an SUV (whatever that is, is it like a ute in Australia?) and see what happens - it'll be exciting at the very least.

I think when it was said you can remove the "cassette base" I was thinking it meant the first two drawers and frame. I didn't think that was possible but I asked just in case. I know the cabinet or optional second paper drawer unit for the third and forth drawers comes off simply by unplugging it and lifting it off (unless the bracket is attached, then you simply remove it). The machine is too tall to fit in the SUV, even with the ADF removed, so anyway i was thinking maybe if it I slid it in on it's back or it's side it would be ok if I removed the parts inside first. I don't see why it would crush the boards, or bother anything except the scanner which runs on springs and cables...

No problem, I know it's a crazy idea but I thought maybe it would work. Some of the smaller SUVs like the Honda CRV are too small.

A couple of things come to mind with that scenario. The optics could very well bust up due to the bouncing of the vehicle and no support for the mirrors flopping loose (when upright they rest on the rails). I can see the polygon mirror falling off the mirror motor as it is held in place by gravity. Even if you remove the waste bottle and ITB cleaning unit, waste toner still in the pipes is gonna fly out of that thing like gas from a cows ass. Some components are built for vertical strength, not so much side to side. Flipping it on its back and I can picture minor bends and twists that may never be visible to the eye but will haunt you to your grave. There's gotta be a friend or coworker that you can borrow a van or pickup from isn't there?

Thanks to all for their inputs, yes, I see that the optics would be the worst potential problem along with toner spillage. I thought maybe someone might have tried it before. I will rent a van when needed as I have been doing.

It's happened a few of times over the years when the customer opted to move their machine vs. giving us a call. In all cases the machine was FUBAR, and yes, that included smashed boards.
