New out of box Ricoh MP4002, "You don't have permission"

Just a quick question here, not sure if anybody else has seen this...

Was setting up a new MP4002, right out of box. Doing all the usual configuration, but when it came to turning on the "Data Overwrite Security" (User Tools, System Settings, Admin Tools, Auto Erase Memory Setting), I got a dialog box that indicated I did not have permission to change this setting. There was another setting (that I forget now) as well that was locked like this, so it effects more than just this, but I figure if I can get the one solved, it will clear up the rest.

According to the service manual, there is no special login to receive permission to change this, just go to the setting, turn it on, and choose the level of security.

I've checked both the Administrator Authentication and User Authentication, everything is turned off in both. Pressing the login button on the control panel results in an error (double) beep, no matter what screen I am on, so there is apparently nothing to log into. There is no on-screen login button under the initial User Tools screen.

Any ideas on this one?

The new default is that you must now first enable Administrator Authentication before you are allowed to enable DOSS. The reasoning is because DOSS is a security feature and without any protections anyone can go into User Tools and disable it without logging in. In the previous generation, it was possible to turn it on (DOSS) without enabling User Tools login, even though setup instructions were specific about turning it on. I'm sure this was a flaw that the government/major players required to be changed as they couldn't trust us to do it.

x2, but I think this actually started before the GW+ series.

I remember going to assist a tech on a call over a year ago, and that was the case. Unfortunately, I don't remember which model.

You know, now that you say that, I think I remember reading that somewhere. I'll give that a go tomorrow. I'm betting that is exactly what is going on. Will probably have to turn on Admin Auth, but leave everything disabled. I don't think they will be too happy with me locking everything down, prior to them getting things set correctly, just to be able to turn on the Overwrite Security.

Even after activating admin authentication, you can do most things without logging in. It also affects the 'delete files in doc server after X days' if I recall.

I did have the ability to turn that off. That's one of the standard settings I actually was able to make, so it must not effect that. At least the ability to turn it off anyway, not sure about changing the number of days, but if you can turn it off, I'd assume that you could also change the days.
