I do not normally service Ricoh, but this one is leaving a 2 inch wide blank area (lead to trail) bout halfway down the page.tick marks on the edge of the blank areas. Does it bout 80% of the time. NOTE: if i reduce to 50%, the blank area reduces along with the image, so it is an optical problem. Anyone seen this? I will try to upload a sample tomorrow....

Sounds like you might have light leaking in from the white pad on the lid. The edge can deform (usually ripple), letting in light (the tic marks would be from the 60 hz fluorescent lamps on the ceiling, they're flickering 60 times a second and the scanner is picking it up). Turn the lights off in the room and make a copy to confirm. -
Re: ricoh aficio 220
Since there's this thread open....I have a quick question. How do you set up the A3 format for the second tray? Is it from those 4 switches from the tray? I read about them in the manual but just want to get sure. And another thing : if the machine displays " replace photoconductor unit" does it stil copy/prints?

Re: ricoh aficio 220
It's been that long since I've seen a Russian C1 I can't remember if they have the green wheel on the front right hand side of the tray to select the paper size. If it does, that's how you do it. Failing that, it'll be in user tools.
With regard to the photoconductor unit message, it will continue to print and copy with this message showing but replace the PCU anyway. With a machine this old it'll thank you in the long run for replacing it's parts on time. It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

Re: ricoh aficio 220
I agree with TonerMunkeh on the dail setting. It sits on the front right of the tray. Make sure that it is set correctly, and then check what it shows on the display, as sometimes those switches are troublesome...Press the GREEN button!!Comment

The original Russains are bomb proof, one of the best machines Ricoh ever put out. As Bantams said, keep an eye on the PM parts and lower fuser frame, clean the ID sensor, PCU cavity and pressure roller cleaning roller every call and they'll pretty much look after themselves. It's 106 miles to Chicago. The original posts states that the blank area reduces with the image when he sets it to 50%, so it can't be the shield glass or the mirror motor. I stand by my response as I've seen this problem in the past.Comment

Re: ricoh aficio 220
I do not know this machine very well, but as teebee said, the problem can't come from the shield glass or the plyogonal motor. When faces of the polygonal motor are dirty, it causes fainted image on the copy, but you can still distinguish something in the fainted area. It doesn't leave blank spots or bands.Comment
