    Ricoh Mp1600 SC820 error code

    Hi
One of my customers has a Ricoh MP1600 but gets intermittant SC820 error (communication error) and it does not recognise the fax board also. I have checked the manual and advises on firmware update i downloaded firmware from TESSA site but flash card does not get recognised ??? any ideas? is there a special tool for loading firmware onto this machine?

    thanks for any advise

Shouldn't be anything special for the firmware. Make sure all of your files are extracted and in a folder named "Romdata."

i know about creating the Romdata folder when doing it with the SD card but this m/c requires a flash card and i have not been able to create a folder on the flash card having enough trouble getting a pc that writes to a flash card.

Didn't notice the flash card part. With those I end up pushing the rfu(remote) firmware via a crossover cable and laptop. I looked on TSRC and there is remote firmware available for this model.

Also worth noting the manual mentions holding the power button on the panel while you turn the hard switch on to start the firmware update.

Since you seem to be in possession of a flash card, Ricoh has a support page for writing to them.

i can't find that software can you send me a link to it please because that would be the best idea for doing the firmware update i have used the ricoh software to write to the flash card but you cannot create a romdata folder. (really rubbish idea for a current model a lot of the older ones use the sd cards which are easier)

              thanks

Yes i have a flash card (antique) and a older pc that will read/write it and i tried using that software that recognises the card and seems to write to it but it does not allow creating of folders on the flash card and when i have written the card and insert it and hold down the power button on start up it.....starts whitout even reading the card really frustrating i have down the firmware updates on other ricoh's via the sd card with no problems and on cf flash cards on Konica Minolta's all so much easier than this. The other guy sudgested doing via remote over crossover this would probably be the best route as either i have a bad flash card or the old pc i am using to write it is not writting proerly but i can't find the software link on ricoh support so i have asked him for a link.

                thank you for helping

You will need Ricoh memory card explorer to write on those flashcards its probably still on tessa somewhere............

edit yes its still on tessa under MCEtool in support tools

If you actually need to use a PCMCIA memory card to update firmware, Athlontini's link works fine in Windows XP Pro, I just tested it. On the other hand, if you need to use the SD card method to update firmware and you are using generic SD cards, you'll need to download and use a formatting utility from Panasonic before copying the firmware to the card. (I think it is called, obviously, SD card formatter.) Most Ricoh machines won't accept firmware updates from SD cards that are formatted in any other way, they will simply ignore the card.

Don't mean to interject here, but I use a standard 1Gig SD Card, formatted under Windows XP. I've never had a problem updating any model of copier with this SD card. Not sure of the file format, will have to look once I'm back at work, but I'd guess it's either FAT or FAT32.

Never had to use any type of special formatting tool...

That's the weirdest thing. Back in the day (I think when 2228c or the 3228c were new) the Panasonic utility was the only way we could format SD cards for firmware updates, any way other than that the machine would ignore the SD card like a gum wrapper in the gutter. I suppose it could have been a feature of the laptops we had then, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the heads up though!

It's possible that it was required in earlier implementations of the SD card update system, but so far everything I've tried my SD card on has worked perfectly. Of course, I forgot to check the file system on it. Will try to remember tomorrow.
