Hello, a user and a company had been gone a week, came back and now the scans won't go through. At first I saw the destination on the display (when you push the scanner button) and it also showed the path 100.100.100.10\scans on WIM. Their in-house IT guy did something on the server (reset it and maybe something else) and now the destination has disappeared on the display but still shows up in WIM. He called in his IT guy and he is saying there is something wrong with the machine. Isn't it weird that WIM still shows the path but it is gone from the display? He said he made no changes while the user was gone, but I suspect something, maybe a Windows update, but why would the display no longer show the destination? I'm hoping someone else has seen this, thanks in advance.

Re: MP161 / 816MF Scan destination disappeared on display - won't scan now
It appears that this user was entered into the address book while the administrator was logged in with a higher authorization than the user. Address book entries will not appear to those who don't have high enough credentials. The easy fix is to make it viewable to all users. Follow the instructions below to change the access level required to view the address book entry.
Press the [User Tools/Counter] key.
Select [System Settings] using [up] or [down], and then press the [OK] key.
Select [Administrator Tools] using [up] or [down], and then press the [OK] key.
Select [Address Book Management] using [up] or [down], and then press the [OK] key.
Select [Program/Change] using [up] or [down], and then press the [OK] key.
Enter the registration number of the entry that you want to control access to. Use the number keys or the Quick Dial keys to enter the number, and then press the [OK] key.
By pressing [Search], you can search by Name, Display Destination List, Regist No., User Code, and Fax No..
Press the [OK] key.
Press [Dest.]
Select [Auth. Protect] using [up] or [down], and then press the [OK] key.
Select [Dest.Protect:Permissions] using [up] or [down], and then press the [OK] key.
Press [Program].
Select the users or groups that you want to grant or deny access to.
You can select more than one user.
By pressing [All], you can select all the users.
Press the [OK] key.
Select the permissions to grant those user(s) or group(s), and then press the [OK] key.
Select the permission from [Read-only], [Edit], [Edit/Delete], or [Full Control].
Press the [User Tools/Counter] key.Net+ PDI+ @Remote -
Re: MP161 / 816MF Scan destination disappeared on display - won't scan now
Thank you very much for the information. The Scan destination is now showing up on the display but still having problems getting a scan through. Sometimes it will work and allow one page throgh and other times it will not and just shows "Scanning..." on the display. I am going to bring out an identical MP161 test machine to see if that is sucessful or not. That way i can eliminate the machine as the cause, which the cutomer and the IT guy are insisting is the culprit.Comment

Re: MP161 / 816MF Scan destination disappeared on display - won't scan now
Are the two attempts to scan made one after another, or days apart? If the latter my first thought would be IP conflict, does the destination have a fixed IP, DHCP or reserved IP? Can you ping the IP with the destination machine turned off? Anything the user has installed in the meantime? (New software: firewall, etc, hardware: NIC)Comment

Re: MP161 / 816MF Scan destination disappeared on display - won't scan now
It's the former, does one scan but then right after won't scan the second. Sometimes it won't go through at all. The scans go to a folder on the server with a fixed IP, they are insisting on that or I would have set up the scan folder on the user's pc. It was working for months and the customer insists that there have been no new changes to the network. However, she did say that all of a sudden they had a Z drive show up that was never there before, so I suspect their IT guy was doing something she ws not aware of. I am going to set up a folder on the user's pc to test a different destination. Do you suggest anything else?Comment

Ping the server with the -t switch,. It will keep pinging until you stop it. May be a defective connector.sigpic

Re: MP161 / 816MF Scan destination disappeared on display - won't scan now
Thank you all for the suggestions. In addition to the intermittent scanning fails to the server, it was at times printing jibberish on some pages. I had tried the PCL6 as well as the PCL5 drivers and the PCL5 did a little better but not always good. I suspected two problems, the machine's controller and also that the server was tweaked by thier IT guy and now it was sometimes blocking scans. So I brought out a second MP161 to test and it worked just fine for printing. Still could not get a scan through to the server so I set up a folder on the user's pc and it scanned just fine. I took the controller out of the test machine and put it in the problem machine and all went well for printing and scan to the the user's pc (but still no scans to the server). Customer will work with the IT guy to attemp to fix the scan to server problem but at least they can scan to the user's pc directly. Has anyone seen a controller go bad? Machine had 94K on it. Customer was moaning about the cost... Also is there a way to repair it myself?Comment

To me it seems too coincidental that the printing/scanning started screwing up at the same time he was 'tweaking' the server. You never did try scanning to the user PC with the original machine, and I have a feeling it will work. I'm thinking it's more likely related to a firmware issue. Maybe the test machine has some newer firmware than the original one, and therefore it played nicer with the printing side of things, and they both may need firmware updates for whatever happened at the serverComment

Re: MP161 / 816MF Scan destination disappeared on display - won't scan now
I would set up a scan to folder on my laptop and scan with a crossover cable. That will tell you a lot.sigpic
