It does not support SSl, and of course Gmail uses SSL. There is a program called "stunnel" that can be configured to funnel the mail through a gmail account and it works well, but it requires that the PC be on in order for it to work.
Otherwise,You need to use the smtp settings of an account that doesn't require ssl - either an account from your isp, or you can setup a generic yahoo email account which i've done for several of my clients, since the machine just requires the proper credentials for the account, and no mail is actually filtered through the 'outbox" or anything. I'm able to use 1 account for several clients.
2 notes: 1: setup a xxx@yahoo.com account and not "@rocketmail.com" extension for example because I believe that one uses ssl, and 2: for the smtp server, use the actual ip address rather than the 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com' (or whatever it is)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that SMTP will only allow you to send to others at Gmail, nowhere else.
In addition to using Sandman's recommendation of Yahoo, I like to use GMX. Never an issue with it yet.

I believe I've heard that to be the case before, nevertheless, I've never been able to get those settings to work for me at all (here in Canada) for some reason
thanks for that....seems to have cured the problem
