Like the one that built into the machine already? You need to enter Service Mode and under Copy SP/System SP -> Mode set the accounting counter to 1.

I think he means an external counter. It needs connecting to the optional key counter interface on the machine, if it has one, then key counter management enabling in user tools to control it.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

        Hit it.

Never done it, but if I had to, I'd simply follow the step-by-step instructions in the service manual.

For an external counter/coin op/card reader you need optional counter interface type A (413012). Had to use one of these to set up a coin op once.

Are you just looking to count the copies made or are you looking for a way to stop people from making copies unless they have a plug in counter?
The type A kit will tell you the difference between color and black and white. The issue you may run into is the color signal is 5VDC and is either high or low depending on the copy type but the count is a 24 Volt pulse that happens at every paper feed regardless of copy type.
