Re: Ricoh MPC 3500 Add toner

If I remember the gear is listed on the same page in the parts catalogue as the drive unit (they are part of that big main drive gearbox) but luckily you can actually change them by going in through the front. Just don't drop the e-ring as it'll fall down onto the laser unit and you'll have to pull that out if that happens.

One thing to also consider with these machines is that all dev units are driven through a clutch from the drum motor for that colour, I have also had this clutch fail causing a permanent "add toner" condition with a grinding noise whilst the machine is trying to add toner. The sure sign of it being a dev drive issue is if you are getting a pile of toner building up over the dev entrance.

I know on these models when i have a replace toner condition when a new bottle was just installed usually you can go into sp which i think its 3045 or 3043 something like that, turn off toner detection. exit sp, shut down machine completly (red switch even) then boot up, run a counter sheet or something if everything looks ok, go back in to sp and turn on the toner detection again. You should see the bottle indicators on the screen if not reboot the machine and it should show normal now. I think the software tracks the bottle dispensing so when the software says it should be out it flags out, sometimes this doesnt reset. I don't think it reads the bottle other then to identify new/oem toner, there was a bulletin for the next gen model for this issue but this works on pretty much all the mpc's designed like that.

As for the noise if its grinding then yes probably gear, this model does have some noise issues but more so with high pitched noise coming from itb and pcu's, chalk board screeching sound from pcu's is the charge roller springs, and itb noise is the cleaning unit per ricoh.

Also make sure the waste toner auger didnt break, i think they can break and make a racket to.

Is new pump filling with toner? Have you checked feed pipe isn't blocked?

Dont think its been mentioned already, usually i just change the pump and hoover out the pipe and nozzle, however one time it continued to ask for toner, in this case i had to replace the toner nozzle (attached to the other end of the pipe which the toner bottle pushes into)

As listed by Counsel, all great info...

Set SP3045 Toner End Detection to OFF. Does the Add Toner go away ? Can you make 50-100 copies ? Turn it back on Does Add Toner come back?

If so check these settings: SP3101 (1-4) shows amount in bottle (5-8) is amount consumed (9-12) is amount remaining (13-16) threshold % for warning message.
Machine does the math and does not like to recover when a negative amount of toner is remaining (sp3101 9-12)
This number is written into NVRAM. Print out the non-default data (sp5990-006) and then clear the Engine NVRAM (SP5801-002) and reprogram all the non-default data back into machine. Reboot and run SP2111 C twice and then A.
