      From the Service Manual :

      -Possible cause-
      Scanner motor connector defective
      Scanner motor defective
      MCU defective
Scanner wire, timing belt, pulley out of position
      PSU defective

BTW, this machine belongs to the museum....

We've had trouble with the scanner pulleys on these. the set screws loosen up and even break.

Not only does it belong in a museum, if you need parts to repair it you might be out of luck. Termination of parts availability was February 2010.

Replace the machine. The customer will get much more functionality.

              alignment tool

I think this one requires the scanner alignment pins. They go in from the top frame to alignment the carriages in the right position. Usually the pulley screws break off the front cable pulley or the back. Then it gets all skewed and maybe the cables pop off. The pins make it slot easier.
