    Afcio mpc4500 sc860

    Hello

I have a machine with a sc860 code. I can get into service mode. Can I replace the hard drive and format it in service mode or do I have to do a firmware update like in the Toshiba's?

You can try just formatting with SP 5832. If that does not work, replace the HDD. Be sure to let the customer know that the address book and anything they have saved in the Document Server will be lost if it hasn't already been lost.

I tried reformatting the hard drive and still get the same code. I have bought a new hdd and installed it. Do I just run the format or do I have to do a firmware update?

This machine has 2 HDD's, so you know that they must be a 'matched set'? You'll likely have to replace them both, unless you have access to the exact same size, make, speed, etc. HDD.
Any size will do, as long as they're 80Gb minimum.
They should automatically format, but otherwise, yes, Format, and then download 'stamp data', then reprogram all scan destinations, etc.

          Happy "Valentine's" day!

Hopefully it is not like the Aficio 2232c/2238c which required a preformatted raid set. You had to order from Ricoh or a used parts provider.

No. I've replaced these with off the rack IDE's

I guess Ricoh uses Raid controller in these machine, so it supposed to replace HDD as a HDD unit.
                From service manual:
When installing a new HDD unit
                1. Turn the main power switch on. The disk is automatically formatted.
                2. Install the stamp data using "SP5853".
                3. Switch the machine off and on to enable the fixed stamps for use.

I just bought two matching hard drives and replaced. When I turned the machine on it said to press restart after it finished. I did so and still get a hard drive failure. I tried downloading the stamp data and I get a message that there is no data. Any ideas?

                  Thank you

There's no mention that you ran SP5832 (format all) as discussed above, then download stamp data

If you can access SP mode, you need to see if there are additional codes logged for the problems you are seeing. Stamp data from sp 5853 comes from the controller, if there is "no data" your controller or NVRAM may be hosed(BAD)................

You may have a problem with the cables going to the drives.

I thought the format worked yesterday but today when I tried it again it failed. I have tried reseating the nvram and when I check the sc history there are a number of different ones all pointing at the hard drive

I just made it back to this. I did run the full format and I get a message that it failed

In most cases, SC's can point to any number of different issues.
However, in this case, every bit of information /experience I have, ALL points to a hard drive failure.
I would look at TB's suggestion of seeing if there are any other SC's being logged, as well as Slim's suggestion to check /replace the cables (and plug connectors) to the HDD,
