I delivered a 161 to a new customer and set up the scanning to email . I configured it to scan directly to the internet provider using their dns servers and everything was wonderful and it worked well . A few days later I got a call from the customer saying the scanning was not working ,Apparently their IT company was in there and re configured it to scan to their own servers so they could control all of the emails . I don't know what they did but since then I could not get the scan to email working at all even using the same settings as I used before .I even brought it back to my shop and put it into my own network. This IT company was pissed that the business was buying my machine instead of theirs and I suspect that they did something to disable this machine . Is this possible that they could have erased some thing in the e prom or ?

Re: Ricoh MP 161 scanning problem
Check that ports 587 and 465 are open and available through the internet provider. They seem to purposely block these ports, and you'll have to have one or the other to scan-to-email authenticating. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

does it pass the connection test to the smtp server?
can you scan to a folder on a crossover connection??
did you check sp 5895 for the nic setting?? This should be set to 1 for all connectivity, 2 is limited to print only and 0 is disable nic.
Just a few things off the top...................
If the IT company truly did disable something they have knowledge of Ricoh equipment and should be held liable. Did your customer allow this or was it done without their knowledge?
this machine isn't ssl friendly and BC is right to check the ports................Mystic Crystal RevelationsComment

Re: Ricoh MP 161 scanning problem
If as tonerbomb said this machine is not SSL friendly then make sure that the SMTP server you are scanning does require SSL. If you have a Gmail account try scanning to it with Google's non-SSL SMTP server. This should work as long as your isp does not block port 25 activity. Check the firmware levels, if the IT company is also a copier dealer, they may have loaded an older firmware. NIC hardware setting is 5985 not 5895. Print or write down your IP settings and use 5801-011 to reset network interface. Check all SMTP server settings in user tools, especially authentication. The main thing that they could have outside the machine is set the router to block SMTP activity from MP 161 IP Address, as a temporary check at the customer's location is to change the 161's address. I would try one that is at least 30 higher or lower on the last octet. If you do find that the IT people have changed something, document it and report it to the customer. They may want to go to a different IT companyComment
