[CQ] SP3200 woes - Garbled copies, prints fine.

A tech's worst nightmare: After disassembling a machine (to clean the contacts of the toner cartridge sensor - was giving the intermitent "please insert toner cartridge" error), when I assemble the machine, it prints fine, no "insert cartridge" error, but the copies come out completely garbled (was fine before). On top of that the boss's on my back bitching because I was supposed to be at another customer a long time ago.

Checked the flatcable, disconnected and reconnected everything in sight on the main board. Happens both on the DF and the glass.

Here's the output as a PDF. Anyone ever got one of these?

PS: I'll gladly move to another (portuguese-speaking) country. Any leads?

I haven't worked on that machine, so I'm not sure of the proper terminology, but the problem is probably in the scanner. If the machine has a sensor board unit (SBU), that is most likely where the problem lies. I've seen that on older machines, prints would look fine but copies would come out kind of looking like someone shredded the original document and placed the results on the platen glass.

First I would start with the firmware. This little (POS) machine had a firmware update back a few years ago for exactly what you went there for - intermittent install toner even though the toner cartridge is installed correctly. Firmware 1.06.05 was the fix. No SD cards so do the update with (remote) WIM. If the toner problems come back - get a new cartridge as this machine is looking for the ID chip and then increments the counters. It does not have a toner end sensor and just counts till it gets to a pre-programmed number.

This machine also is weird in the way it handles setting the "white level". There was a bulletin about the flimsy DF/platen cover , leakage and re-setting the white level that I can't find but there are a few settings in Copy Setup that could be changed from the op panel menu.

Get yourself into service mode and run a few tests - DRAM test , ROM test , Shading test is where I would head to check the CCD. If (POS) is not cooperating you could try a memory clear to bring the unit back to factory defaults.

If all no good - order a whole new scanner unit .
