Memory clear has likely been done to try and resolve a problem. (SP5-801)
    Was it you?
    That's a BIG no-no!!!
Hopefully , you have the factory default data sheet, because it will all have to be re-entered. (It's usually behind the jam removal sheet inside the front cover).

As above. I bet you have a few other problems, like background when copying from the glass, colour misregistration, tray regos and alignments all out, etc. It's my opinion they are never the same after a memory reset. Good luck.

What exactly have you actually done so far to resolve this issue?

There is only one, re-enter those values.

X2, the problem will be the gray balance setting is at factory default. You will find it on the birth certificate, otherwise use the values given in the resolution below >>>>>

                [Symptom]
Background when ADS Mode is turned Off
In Full Color the background is a process black, In Black and White mode the background is gray. With ADS on there is no evident backgrounding. When ADS is turned off and exposure is at the center setting, backgrounding is exhibited. Print Jobs and internal prints do not have background

                [Cause]
The gray balance adjustment NV RAM Data has been corrupted and has reverted to the default value
                [Resolution]
Reset the value of SP 4685 - 001 and 002, SP4686 - 001 and 002 and SP4687 - 001 and 002 to the value on the Factory Data Sheet.(Located under Jam Instruction Sheet on the Front Cover)
If the Factory Data Sheet is not available try starting with these settings and fine tuning as needed.

Are you trying to say that there is no background when you copy off the glass?
Maybe you trying to copy money or something similar.

Thanks for the pictures! We're kind of visual here, and as most of us can't physically see the machine and what it is doing pictures are helpful.
That being said, the left hand picture makes it look almost like the machine is copying on heavier paper than it is set up for, or maybe there is a problem with ITB or fuser cleaning (the repeating image is the clue for that). Maybe take a look at those to make sure they aren't the problem.

I'm intrigued by how a nearly 8 year old machine only has 2000 total pages on it.
Me thinks there are several circumstances that we haven't been informed about that lead to this condition.
Not to mention, without a copy of the original, who knows what that copy should actually look like? (aside form the obvious issues)

If the problem occurs only when using the ADF, I would make sure the anti-static strip or mylar on the underside of the adf is not overhanging the slit glass. Stray fibres from these can refract light and project it onto the originals, creating weird coloured lines on prints. Try budging the adf as far to the left as possible and see if it makes a difference.

Randy, are you getting a red background if you copy in Black & white mode? single color it and see if you can duplicate the problem. It looks like the SBU settings is corrupted or initialized.
