    MP C305 - SC899

I've read a lot about this fault over the years, but have never found a definite solution.

Going to see this little machine in the morning which is constantly giving this code.

    There's about 20 people printing to it with a mixture of vista, 7, 8 and macs 32 & 64.

All using a mixture of browsers. Apart from updating firmware what else can I do?

    Thanks for the advice

As you say latest firmware is the key here, do all the firmwares (I know some techs that just do system)

Usually this fault occurs when printing from a webpage, advice the customer to try another browser if it keeps hapening.

Thanks, updated everything. Hopefully it will cure the fault.

Find the entry for your SC899 in SP7403 (SC History) and see what it says under "FILE". It'll usually say one of three things, and I have a strategy for each:

        FILE: fcs
        -Update System and Fax firmware

        FILE: sdk-x86
        -Update Java

        FILE: pcl
-Update the PCL firmware (I generally lump FCU and NetworkSupport in with it)

Since the problem occurs with both Windows and Mac OS, the Firmware History a number of SC 899 when printing from Macs corrected in the last couple of updates for the Network Control. Still waiting for the update to correct the problem when printing certain web pages.

I've had good results changing 2 settings in the PCL driver. Under the print quality tab change the truetype font type to download as bit image or soft font (depends on model driver) and the graphics mode will generally be set to vector, change it to raster. This has been 100% successful for me.

SC899's have been tough to deal with.

Typically they are caused by a user printing a web page with the "file" then "print".

Besides updating firmware (which does help, but isn't a 100% fix from what I have seen), I also instruct the customer to use the "print this page" feature of a web page if it has it. (many do). Failing that, they should go to print preview, then print it out of there.

Should a SC899 occur, I show the customer how to delete the offending print job, reset the machine and get them going.

I have not gotten any calls back on machines that have done SC 899's using the above procedures.

                Re: MP C305 - SC899

My guess is that part of the problem lies with either web plugins or HTML5 causing issues with print data. The advice to use the 'print this page' option that a lot of websites have is spot on since it takes out all of the extraneous code that makes the web look pretty, but isn't needed for processing the document. Another big change is the number of web designers now using online fonts for their websites: these fonts are only used on the web, and often are embedded not as CSS features (web formatting) but as an image or other element, so the MFP has no idea what to really do with the data. Even though it may be sending these web fonts as text, there's nothing in its font listing that's close enough for the machine to do anything with, or if the web fonts are set at a variable height, the MFP may not understand how to properly format it.

With HTML5 becoming more common, and web designers all but being 'too cool' to worry about printing their graphics intensive, high resolution websites, the engineers back at the manufacturers are going to need to take a harder and harder look at how they'll need to structure web input for printing. Another possible thing is that with HTML5 being so flexible, is it possible that it's actually being used for the UI or other elements in newer MFP's so that the machine is actually getting confused as to what's a print job, and what's actually part of its command structure???

A lot of thoughts there, but as common as this problem is becoming it's something where every potential cause needs to be examined.

Intershit Exploder is a favourite for this, Firefox and Chrome don't cause this fault.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

                  Hit it.
