MP 4000/LD040 - Black band along top edge only with large print jobs

They've been having this problem off and on for past few months. When they print a large number of pages (100+ at a time), a black band about .25"-.5" wide, non-uniform will appear across the top of the page going the same way as paper feed direction. I don't think it appears if they do SEF instead, but they use an LCT so no option for switching the feed direction.

I thought it was finally taken care of after I replaced the dev and rebuilt the drum and fuser, but it has been about 3 months (and maybe 30k prints) and they're complaining of the same thing. Not sure if the problem didn't go away and they just didn't bother to mention it or if it has come back.

    Anybody experience this before?

Any suggestion to try first? I was thinking developer, but would like to re-affirm or discredit my belief.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

You may be getting uneven contact of the cleaning blade to the drum. Also, on the MP 4001/LD140 they removed the cleaning blade #2. Had something to do with copy quality issues. Depending on total copies made so far, you may want to replace the entire PCDU.

When you did the developer did you clean the mag roller? I always see this issue if the mag roller has that black wax and toner residue on it. Pull the pcu out and check if the mag roller is black under the toner\developer. If it has only been 30k , you might be able to save the developer. I would take out the mag roller wipe off the excess onto a sheet of paper with my fingers and pour that back into the dev housing. Clean the mag roller off with folded paper and then vacuum. The mag roller should be nice and shiny. Run about 200 copies and see how they look. Make sure that you're using OEM developer and toner. Good luck.

Thanks for that info. I'll definitely look into it since that's something I haven't tried before/known about before.

Ah yes. I'll try this first. I am wondering if the band will show up if I run a lot of blank copies through. Welp, no time like the present to find out.

          I'll update later this afternoon/tomorrow.

I've always been told to try and avoid running blank copies through the machine (something to do with wear I guess).
I'm going to say that cleaning the mag roller will most likely sort your fault out (providing the Dev is within life), before you clean it check to see if there is any build up on the roller that lines up with your copy quality issue.

So, cleaning it up a couple months ago never resolved the issue (they just never told me), and I did clean the mag roller spotless last time and all that. It's also only been 16k prints since then.
I accidentally threw away my sample sheet, but it's not a band like I see on similar machines when the dev roller is causing dirty prints. It's more jittery than that and I know it's from the drum, so I'm going to go with the uneven blade pressure like slimslob suggested. Ordering a new PCDU. Then throwing the machine into the river if it continues.

My machine has pretty low usage so I don't think it has been that many prints, but there was a design reconfiguration of the PC unit. I believe it removed a blade or something, at any rate, that's why I ordered a whole new unit and so far so good.

open the development assy and check the toner entrance filter it it is clean. and if not clean it. the toner will always accumulate in the toner entrance if the toner filter is dirty that causes the problem given that the mag roller is clean already.
