It cost less to buy a hacked cronometer for the customer wich steals ten seconds x minute.

I like the hacked cronometer idea, it's got to be easier than trying to speed up one of these Ricohs. Now if you really want to speed up the MP4000, replace the IO pcb, the SBU pcb and the contoller, format the HDD, you need to clear NAVRAM on the controller, then load the MP5000 frimware. Good luck, be patience, it's not easy.

You also need a valid serial number as if the speed portion of the serial number does not match, it will throw a code and just might blow one of those replaced boards. Oh, by the way, you will have to replace the NVRAM, possibly at least one motor, possibly the laser unit and the polygon motor. These are items that on many of the 35/45 ppm models were different. To be sure, get yours parts catalog and go through it item by item. If a reference number on the explosion page shows two different numbers on the number then list, then that part is different.

And if you are wanting to change from a MP 4000B basic model with B/W scanning to a MP 5000 with color scanning, you need to replace everything except the frame and covers.

Also, whether you convert the machine or not, if you are not willing to maintain it properly afterwards it will become an engine of sadness for both you and your customer.
At least that's what I've seen, for what it is worth.
