Obviously you want to try the easiest things first like cleaning optics and slit glass, lifting the scanner and replacing the PCU, if all those fail you might look to laser as a last resort.

is there any difference if you make a copy on the glass or use the adf?

how about scanning? is it set up for that? you could try to send a scan and see what it looks like.

I recall that putting the glass back on upside down would cause some problems...service book says "Position the white marker [E] at the rear-left corner and the blue marker at thefront-left corner when you reattach the ARDF exposure glass."

I try to put in a different PCU or drum if it is available too just to see what happens...1 more thing that can be ruled out for sure then. (Even if it is just on copying)

try to clean the optics again . think the whole problem is in the scanner section

Gonna say it again, Had this exact problem, exact same machine. I tried all the easy stuff (clean optics, R&R PCU) finally out of desperation changed the laser unit... Fixed! Can't explain it but that is what worked.

I don't doubt you, but so far the poster has preferred to question the advice, and argue that it IS the scanner since the print quality is fine, and has so far not even tried a PCU - which I also am confident will resolve the problem since I've had it myself on several occasions.

Another vote for trying the PCU first if you can't do a scan to someplace and look at it.

I have had too many of these make an ok print and a crummy copy and it is the PCU nearly every time.

.....And please remember to NOT return to tell us what the actual problem was (for any of your posts), OR to thank anyone for their advice. We HATE that!
