Apple and all Unix systems support SMB, through the use of Samba. Starting with OS X 10.7 SMB is the native file sharing format in OS X since it provides more stable performance than Apple's old AFP protocol.
Here's a link to the easiest method to setting up a share folder. The instructions are for 10.7, but the overall process hasn't changed.
You may need to update NCS firmware. Don't have time right now to look up exact firmware you will need, but with as old as the C4500 is it will probably require special/custom firmware.
I'm scanning to 10.10.3 with an MP161, no firmware update needed.
If you have been keeping your MP 161 up to date on firmware then it already has NIB firmware v6.19 released 7/10/13.
The MP C4500 was no longer a production model at the time OS 10.7 was released and therefore there is no standard firmware for the C4500. There is a Special/Custom firmware available from TSRC or rfg-esource, B222_NCS_v5.20_LRC0355 dated 2/7/13.
