    Sharp MX3550 error code L4-11

    Hello
This machine is giving a juddering / clicking noise from the shift unit.. no internal finisher attached.

I removed the shift unit and the housing around the motor had melted, causing it to deform and the motor was extremely hot...

A replacement unit was fitted today but the issue remains..

The unit tries to judder back to home position and randomly throws an L4-11

I have cleaned all sensors, cleaned and greased the shifter rail and cannot feel what I would call excessive resistance..

    It sounds like gears skipping...

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Check to make sure the screw that prevents the shift assembly from moving was removed from the shift unit. It's part of the installation procedure if you do not have an inner finisher. Sounds like the motor is trying to run and the screw is preventing it from doing so. It's in an odd location. You have to removed the shift unit, turn it over and you should see a screw on the forward part of the mechanism.

    Good luck.

The shifter unit actually appears to run freely.. nothing preventing it from moving side to side... I don't think it is one the sensors either as even in the middle position it is juddering / grinding...

Remove the motor and put the shifter unit back in the machine.

Try moving the shifter by hand and see if you have a mechanical bind.

          Hello

Did that already... seems to move freely.. but not sure how free it should be...

Also, if you leave the motor attached you can still slide the unit and feel the motor moving.. which also does not seem to bind....

            PCU PWB drives the motor.

If the shifter moves freely then the motor is not driven properly.

I have to second what Spanky just said. I've seen a Sharp MX3050 or 3070 burn that shift motor up because the PWB went bad, providing the wrong voltage to the motor. I'd replace both the motor and board together.

This is a known issue and they not only added a grounding harness, but they have also changed the PCU pwb.
If the motor is get so hot that it is melting the plastic (yep, I have seen this melting twice!!), the PCU pwb is the cause.
If you replace the PCU pwb on these models, remove the fuser, install the PCU, wait 10 seconds, power down, install fuser and power up.

Failing to plan is planning to fail!!!

What finisher option or receiving tray option do you have installed ?

Thank you, I had an L4-11 on a Sharp MX-3570
Following MFP-TB-1429, MFP now requires an earth harness on the fusing paper guide unit.

Looks like static builds up and then in turn fries the PCU PWB, which in turn tells the OSM motor to go back and forth in a heretic way, which pretty much sounds like a loud grinding noise.

                          Solution:
                          New PCU-PWB (Transferred EEPROM).
                          New Earth Harness.
                          CN Emergency Firmware Update.

Thank you again, and good luck.
