    Using Sharpdesk for other manufacturers

    Greetings,

I have a client who currently uses Sharpdesk to automatically convert and OCR files to word docs. We swapped out the Sharp for a Ricoh not knowing they were using Sharpdesk so the automated OCR conversion is no longer able to occur since the device being used is not Sharp. Of course you can still use Sharpdesk to manually convert and OCR but this adds another step to the process.

My question: I there a certain "hot folder" that the OCR engine is watching so when a file appears it is automatically converting it? It's probably in some sort of proprietary format but I'm really trying to get this Ricoh to work with the automated OCR process.

    Any help is much appreciated...Thanks.

Well, I have never tried to use the NST on any other machine than a Sharp, but my guess would be that the NST will refuse to work if the machine is not a Sharp due to the IP / Hostname provided not being detected as a Sharp.

I am quite sure that the OCR Software does not "watch", as you call it, since there is no additional running process besides those related to the NST as far as I know.

My guess here is that the NST "hands" the job over to the piece of OCR software that comes with it and it will therefore not be possible to automate the process. MAYBE Windows Scripting offers the needed functions to start a certain program when a certain event occurs, but I am not good enough at scripting to be sure or of help. Good luck!

If the Ricoh will scan to FTP then it shouldn't be a problem. All you'd have to do is set the IP address of the workstation in the Ricoh & configure the FTP port to (usually) 4687. You can check the port it's using by opening the NST. Basically the NST is just an FTP server running on the workstation. The NST moves it to Sharpdesk & launches the program. The only issue I'd see is if the users are running DHCP then the MFP wouldn't get updated to the MFP with their new address. (that's another thread)
      I don't work on Ricoh's so I don't know anything about them.
I'm not positive it will work, but don't know why it wouldn't.
      Hope that helps !

True. You can scan via FTP to that "ftproot" folder but the scans are never picked up. Sharpdesk will not allow you to associate another device from another manufacturer since the MIB info does not match. Therefore you can never attach a scanning profile which automates the scanning and OCR conversion.

Once you scan into the ftproot folder the scans just sit there and I don't know of another method to automate the process.
