I have had a few where the pwb in the rear gets a hairline crack (noticable on rear side of pwb) and gives f3-12 or 22 depending on the side. if all looks good you may want to clear the code with sim 15 (lcc trouble clear). Also the lift motor shafts can get twisted and will not allow the coupler to slide in and out freely.

I can confirm what Nachoman said is correct. I have had a few C-Dragons with the cracked PWB for tray detection. You will see 2 small, square boards behind the main tandem tray. You should check the left hand side one for your error code. Remove the tandem tray (careful, because its heavy), or remove the lower trays and reach up from underneath.

I've just spent a few hours with a mx 7000 doing the same thing.

i've changed the sensor boards around, swapped the motors etc. when i cheat the tray sensors and the tray present sensor with the tandem removed the motor turns no problem. when the tray is in place there is no tray2 lift. with the paper feed unit removed and tandem tray pushed in , the coupling is pushed back but does not engage with the motor. the spring tension should be more than enough to push the coupler into mesh once the motor begins to rotate. i cant see how it doesn't slide along the shaft.

I'm going back tomorrow after modifying the ends of the coupler to a slighly rounded profile

there is a slight twist to the shaft and i removed the coupler and stretched the spring a little.

any other ideas out there to help us out???

Even the slightest twist in the shaft can cause the coupling piece to stay pushed in, therefore not engaging with the tray lift. You will get a F3 code because the tray has not lifted, even though the motor is turning.
Has nothing to do with spring tension, has nothing to do with roounding off the coupling piece. If that shaft is even slightly twisted, I replace it.
There is a modified lift motor unit with a stronger plastic in the shaft, therefore attempting to prevent this problem. I have still seen this shaft twist on the newer part number too.

Common causes of lift motor twisting......

Paper wedged into sides of tandem tray (poorly loaded by client), preventing a smooth lift of the tray, causing excess stress on the lift shaft.

On the standard 500sheet trays, the lift plate can get stuck in the upper position when empty. When you pull the tray out, the Paper Empty Lever gets caught in the tray and ends up getting snapped off. This causes the tray to not be detected at the upper limit. The lift motor will continue to turn, twisting the shaft. Put some grease under the lift plate to ensure smooth up/down movement of the tray, preventing sensor lever damage then lift motor damage.
