    AR-286 issues (2)

Just got an Ar-286. It has a copy count of 308,007 When I got it back to the office there were two issues:

    1) the front edge of the copy has some extra uneven toner along it

    2) I can't get the finisher to line up properly. The copies come out fine until I attach the finisher and then they just bunch up before it gets to the finisher. The finisher was unplugged from the machine when I first tried, but plugging it in didn't seem to make a difference. The finisher is clicking into the guide. The guy I bought it from said he had it lined up and it worked fine, but then he took apart and the problem started.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I hope you didn't pay very much for this machine. The extra toner could be several issues, have you cleaned the interior of the copier? What finisher are you trying to put on this copier. If you look on the back of the finisher you will see a small square that should read ARFN1 or ARFN2. If for some reason you have and ARFN3 it will not work with this unit. Does the finisher cycle when you turn on the power, does it make any noise?

    Good luck.

No I did not pay too much for it. When I got here this morning I was able to get the finisher to work, not sure what I did, maybe the plugs were loose or something.

I cleaned the machine including the rollers and it seems to be feeding better. I am still getting an edge of toner on the first edge out of the machine. It seems to have gotten a little bit better, but not completely.

The AR-FN1 N has a couple of common issues. The side door being made of plastic can break in any number of ways, allowing the rollers to wallow around in there.

There are also several foam rollers in there that can fall apart. If the skin is gone from the surface ( if the roller looks rough), those rollers are beyond use.

Another common wear point is the fins on the top door. You'll get paper cuts in the fins toward the far front and rear edges. The simple fix is just to sand down the affected fins until the cuts are gone.

Another common problem is delivery people lifting the finisher by the exit tray, knocking it out of alignment. The tray should be approximately level/parallel with the stapling tray where the paper exits.

It's all really moot though since this machine is no longer supported by Sharp, and only the most basic consumables can be found. The next time you purchase a used machine, check the manufacture date. If it's more than 7 years old, you'll have difficult getting parts. =^..^=

            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

how old is this machine? It seems to be working alright, and for the price I paid if it ever needs anything more than basic supplies I will probably just toss it and get another.

I have found an ar-275 with 300,000 copies that belonged to a church pretty inexpensively. Would that be a better machine? I saw the specs are a little different in that it does 1200 dpi instead of 600, but I don't know that will make much difference.

              btw, thanks for the replies!

Just look at the serial number tag on the back. There's a date right on it. I'm guessing 10 to 12 years old. The AR-275 is ~7 yrs old.

It really sort of a toss up between the two. The Cougar is older but capable of higher counts. If you are going to try to print with it the print cards have a lot of issues. The Leopard is a little newer, but still at that age where parts are going to start becoming scarce shortly. =^..^=

lol, I just checked, the manufacture date is July 1999. I guess its better than using the old fax machine as a copier, but it sure takes up alot more space.

My advice, get what you can out of it. Toner, drums, blades, developer, are all available from aftermarket sources, but anything else will probably have to come out of a graveyard. =^..^=
