[Misc] SMTP port 25, E-mail Alert

I am trying to set up RED on some of our older machine. The problem being that our older machines do not support SSL. Therefore, I need to find a free email provider that did not require SSL, in order to send an email. I found out that port 25 was the port everyone used back in the day in order to send email before SSL.

I found a free mail provider called lavabit.com that would allow me to send email over port 25. It worked for like a week and now it is not working. I was wondering what other professional in the field do to get around these issues with machines that do not support SSL.

Any help or ideas on this situation would be very helpful.

GMX has free email that does not use SSL. I use it all the time.

Failing to plan is planning to fail!!!

Alot of ISP's block port 25 leaving their network to try and stop spam. Check to see if your SMTP server accepts port 587.

          Update to the Problem:

I had been using lavabit but I also tried GMX. Unfortunately, neither worked for me. I am still not about to send emails from the machines. When I test it on the top page of the machine, it says it is able to communicates just fine, but when I tell it to send an email to my work email or my Gmail account I receive nothing.

I have checked with both email providers and their services are up and working.

I have checked with my ISP and they are not blocking port 25. Moreover, when doing some test through my command prompt and I am able to communicate with SMTP servers over the internet through port 25.

It leads me to think that I am setting up the machine wrong.

To set up the DNS, I am going to cmd prompt and typing in ipconfig /all and am getting my information for the DNS there; specifically I am using the DNS servers address on the command prompt for my primary server settings on the top page. I am also getting the domain name from the command prompt under Primary DNS Suffix.

          For the SMTP settings
          Primary SMTP server: smtp.lavabit.com
          Secondary SMTP server: nothing
          Port Number: 25
          Timeout: 20
          Reply e-mail address: noreply@lavabit.com

I cannot use port 587 because the machine I am trying to receive emails from do not support SSL. If they did I would just gmails smtp settings.

Do your customers have exchange servers on site? If so, then use those as you can create an Open SMTP Receive Connector for your devices that doesn't require TLS/SSL.

I also just did a quick telnet into the lavabit.com smtp server and it appears that it could be open and not require authentication, but I would believe that this server doesn't allow SMTP Relaying which is probably hindering your progress.

On the port 587 thing, just because it is port 587, it doesn't mean that it requires SSL. Its just another port number to try and see what happens. Exchange 2007 and 2010 both use port 587 for internal Outlook clients and use TLS, but you can turn the requirement of TLS off which is what you need for your machines to funstion anyway.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

The clients that have these older machine barely have a network, let alone a server. Do the settings I entered in look correct? In my mind, at this point, there isnt really anything else it could be

Upon pinging smtp.lavabit.com I received the address of 72.249.41.52, try entering that as your secondary smtp server, just in case you're having a DNS issue.

Else, it sounds like they may have a firewall blocking outgoing data from the copier, if your connection test is good then logically there is nothing wrong with the settings in the copier, and I would suggest looking at their network configuration.

If not that would explain why the connection test works but no email is received. The mail server can't send to a ficticious address.

I have already tested to router and the firewall. I had it routing port 25 through to port 25. So, I don't think that is the issues either. Plus, I didn't work when I had the firewall turned off

I had tried everything but changing the reply address to a functioning email address and that did it. Much thanks

Thats great to hear. That has bitten me in the ass a few times. Wether its a non valid email address or a typo or even a , instead of a . in the address.
